    Hi everyone,

I've had issues with my Asus M6R Notebook recently, and decided to format the disk to set up an new installation of windows xp with the recovery CDs provided with the computer.

I have already done that before (as I bought this notebook in 2004), but this time I couldn't run the complete recovery. The installation runs normally with the first recovery CD, but after inserting recovery CD no.2 in the drive, the installation fails in the middle of the process, with an error message saying that the disc is damaged/corrupted.

It appears that there are a few light scratches on the CD that might be responsible for incomplete reading. I tried to make a clean back up copy of this CD with CloneCD, but the problem remains: while trying to make the copy, CloneCD states that several sectors cannot be read.

I called Asus support twice; the first guy I talked to said I had to send him the computer for repair (!), and the second person I talked to told me that installing only the first part (only recovery CD no. 1) might work, but it actually doesn't.

So, I really have a problem with this CD no.2, and for now there is no way that I can have my machine working; And to my understanding Asus won't provide any replacement CD.

What can I do ? The only solution I am thinking of is finding someone who is willing to provide me with a copy of this CD no. 2. Although my notebook is 4 years and a half old now, it' really a nice piece of computer and I don't want to buy another one immediately !

Any suggestion or help will be greatly appreciated !

    Thanks

You could get a copy of XP and do a clean install then get all the drivers from Asus' website

Some companys will send you recovery cds for 40 dollars. I know lenevo does this. Your best option is to do what stealthl said and reinstall using a clean non recovery version of windows then load the drivers from the asus website. if you have a usb thumb drive throw em on all there. so you will have access to them right there. Then after its all up and running download or buy a copy of acronis true image. you can then make recovery media. it will restore it back in like 15 minutes if something happens. its great software.

    Hi Seb-SF,

Do you have an e-mail address I can contact you on? If so I can arrange a new set of recovery discs for you.

    Kind regards,
    Joe Dawson

Have you tried to resurface the disk with a Disk Doctor? I've had that happen with some older games (Torment, Baldur's Gate, etc.) and the Disk Dr. cleared the issue up for me.
