Basically I'm trying to buy a portable gaming laptop that I can take to work and college with me. On hand Z70VA is a widescreen and I dont really like that but it looks like it is a better bang for the buck (components wise). V6va is the kind of LCD size I want but it is rather pricy for the components. From my understanding V6va has a better build also but the model is going out of the market?
On another note W3j is coming out next month and I keep hearing nothing but good things about it. What do you guys think?

I'll tell you right now, if you're looking at the V6va, you should be looking at it for it's screen, period..... and get them while they still last if that's what you want... you won't find a better screen, not even on the new models...
The W3 is a great system and there really hasn't been anything but good said about the model all year... but really nothing bad about the V6 or Z70 either. You're looking at 3 awesome systems and you just have to pick one.
The V6 really is the next generation in terms of meterials and build after Asus made the Z70 which comes from the M6 chassis....... If you pick the V6va, you're going to get it for the IPS screen and that's why a lot of people were buying them because the new V6j doesn't have it. The new screen is very good, but the IPS screen is perfect. I don't know if we have any left or not, but I did leave the last one under my desk last night because I figure a forum member may want it. -
The W3j will have the advantage of a X1600 256mb video card. However it will be a 14" wide screen.
Also, its been said before on the forums that the Ensemble units have slightly better build quality than the BTOs. If it were me, I would pass on the Z70va and either choose the V6va for the screen (but sacrifice the video card), or wait for the W3j. -

For they're needs, the differences between all of the systems are going to be moot. What they'll see and feel every day for a few years are the dimensions and weight....... and you can't use a system without looking at the screen.... well you can, but you know what I mean. You don't need an IPS screen for "normal college work and light gaming" .... but there's nothing better to use, period.

To be honest I dont really that much about the screen. Only thing I didnt like is that before I owned my IBM T43 I owned a Sony (I forget what model but it was a 12" with Radeon 9600). Anyways, the screen had a glare to it and in dark spots in the games I would see my reflection.
Another thing I kind of dont want to get a widescreen because for a lot of games it creates resolution problems.
Im also looking at Asus V6J but it has Nvidia GeForce Go 7400, I heard this slightly worse then X700. What is the real difference in performance. -

The glaretype displays rely on backlight, although the IPS screen is better than what was on that IBM or the Sony..... It's the best glaretype display to play games on, I can tell you that much... the V6j screen will be more liek the Sony.
-
the V6J screen is ok. no leakage like the sony though
Justin, any idea why ASUS stopped using IPS in the new V6J? -
Even now there's not enough buzz about it...
Most of that comes from Justin or I talking about it, and that won't justify the popularity for ASUS to bring it in on other models. -
Oh. they could have at least left the ips in the v6 series...anyway i'm quite happy with my v6j screen
-

... they could have left it on the V6j, but it's not just about money... yes it would have increased the cost of the system about $175, but the real issue is availability. The V6va was really made in a limited edition. The V6j's are being made for main stock for every country...... there's more V6j's coming to the US in the first shipment than were V6va's made for the whole world..
.. Asus used the V6va to expose the IPS screen and it's my belief that they'll use it on the limited edition Lambo models starting in April..... That would make a lot of sense. -
Well I read several reviews on the V6va and a lot of people state that there is some noticeable ghosting on this LCD. Any idea as to why?
So does anyone know what kind of difference to expect from Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 to x700? -
Yeah the 7400 is worse for gaming than the X700. as for the ghosting on the V6Va monitor thats surprising since IPS is supposed to have a better responce time and better viewing angles.

... first, I don't know where you've "read serval v6va reviews" - but the only people who have reviewed them are end-users who bought them and there aren't that many who even took the time to do that.
.. Now. SRD here has had a Z70, a V6va and a w3v - If I'm not mistaken.... he may very well be the only source who can argree or comment on my opinions between the systems... -
Well I read a total of 4 reviews (I can find the links for them if you want me top) and 3 out of 4 said there is ghosting.
By worse how much worse is it? I understand its difficult to explain but are we talking about 10 FPS here or more like 1-2 FPS? -
Is there ghosting? Sure there is. The important question is: What is the point of reference? Many people coming from CRTs or fast 'gaming' LCDs to a notebook will be disappointed by the screen no matter what. Sub 5W power consumption and response times similar to those of desktop monitors don't go together.
I’ve only tried a V6v(a) in passing, but I’ll sign the petition calling for it’s screen to be officially declared a bloody **** fine notebook LCD. -

I know that the V6va has what has to be the best laptop screen all around... but I also have used an Asus 17" desktop screen with 3ms response time..... the refresh is better, without a doubt.. but the V6va's IPS screen is better t han the old V6v or the new V6j screen.... I can tell you that much.
-
The thing is you might be able to see ghosting on that LCD with like a nvidia 6800 but i just dont think the x700 is fast enough to show much of it at all. and the 7400 scores like 1900 on 3d marks 05 where the x700 scores like 2550. again 10 fps isnt alot when your talking High end card. But on a x700 it would be noticable to lose 10FPS.
Come on justin dont go around telling people how much of a compulsive buyer i am. if i couldnt afford it id have a problem -

I bet...... Don't worry, I know you very well, almost as it I see a lot of myself in you.
On that note...... right now the V6va became the best choice for anyone to get while they last because not only is it the last Asus system with the IPS screen.... and a standard 2 year global warranty..... but it also just got a $100 rebate for anyone who still has them. -
Justin,
I'm looking to get a v6va in about two weeks. I noticed that you mention on your site that there are new specs as of 11/05. Since you may not have any in stock by the time I'm ready to buy, what are the differences between the new spec'd models and the pre-11/05 model if I end up going with another vendor?
I'd like to go with proportable if at all possible but from your last post, it seems like they won't last two weeks....
Appreciate the help. -
Differences listed on site as well. -
Just be warned the V6va with the IPS screen is in very very limited quantities.

The V6va came out at that time. Prior to that the only model out was the V6v........ 64mb x600, 2x -rw, matte type lcd.....
Asus created this rebate that starts on Monday and they just made it a blanket rebate for all the old models to try to help people clear out stock.... There aren't many left and what are may last a couple weeks, but with all the new models - most people who aren't in the know, don't know or care to ask what's special about the old models.... so although I think what's left in the country should go rather fast with these rebates..... you never know. All old models are cleared out of stock, with I think the exception of one of the V6va's.... but Asus wants us to leave all of them up on the site until their stock is depleted. But, screw Asus.... check those sites of some of the forum members.... anyone with physical stock would appreciate you taking it off their hands... but be careful about that. I'll tell you that all of the old models are basically out of stock but we'll still order them in which takes a couple days, for those who want the rebates... but not many other places will actually tell you that and they'll say it's in stock but have to order it anyway. Asus knows who physically has in stock inventory....... I feel it's important to take the stock off those who really have them and really need to get rid of them first... but like I said, I think we're out of just about all of the old units. -
Thanks for the replies. I'm a little confused however. Is there a V6va *without* an IPS screen like coriolis seems to allude to? Or is the IPS screen what makes the V6Va a V6Va instead of just a plain V6V like what Justin seems to be saying?
If I were to get a V6Va and there are non IPS screens available. I would not even consider buying it... -
