Because I am bored, I decided to wikipedia asus.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS#Origin_of_the_name

"According to the Asus sales manager Alexander Kim, the name Asus originated from Peg asus the winged horse of Greek mythology, seen as symbol of success and revival; the first three letters were dropped to give the resulting name a high position in alphabetical listings."

You learn somthing new everyday. :D

That brings up a new question of pronunciation. Should it be pronunced as in Pegasus (uh-sus)?

I always say it as uh-sus as in pegasus... but when i began calling diff retailers, "Hi do you sell the uh-sus w3v?" i kept getting, "What..? ... w T b?"
    "No, W 3 V"
    "D T B ?"
    "No W 3 V"
    "Oh, W T V"

    "No THREE.. as in 1, 2, 3... "
"Oh 1,2,3 V.. *speaks to the other guy* do we have a 123V?"
    "ahh... noo.. it..s W for wolf, 3 , V for violin!"
    "Oh, w3v?"
    "Yessss"

Anyway, i got tired so i'm waiting for the m9v... that is much easier to pronounce.

Getting back to the uh-sus, aysus.. yeah, it just helped in helping people understand more what i was tryina say...

I remember the pronunciation thread, but knowing the origin of the name made me question the conclusions drawn there.

And I do agree, the Asus model names are hard to pronunce.

    Wow...really?
The name is originally from Greek?
    Never knew that though...
but I know it is a brand from Taiwan.
And all its products are MIT(Made in Taiwan),
which means they are more reliable than the MICs.

Well... depends. I don't want to contradict what I've said in the old 'How important is brand thread.' But... I think theres plenty in a name. You wouldn't buy a computer from a company called Funkware would ya?

Pegasus? I think it makes more sense if their English name is just a transliteration of their Chinese name. But then again, maybe they made up their English name first, then transliterated it into Chinese...

Note also i have found asian people to be more knowledgable aobut laptops than Aussies, lol.

I was talking to this one guy about the w3v -- and he insisted that it was an outdated model. I was like, "But it's 1.86ghz"
him, "yeh, well.. they don't make them anymore."

    what a moron.

yesterday i went to look for asus notebooks, just to see and try
like relvax's case, they thought i was looking for acers
when they found out i was looking for asus,
they corrected me and said, 'oh.. it's Ah-soo/sew/sue'
but um i tot in some chinese dialect,
    that means dog :p

wonder if they'll come out with k9 lines.

The Pegasus thing is correct. When you call the company, it does sound like uh-sus...however, I think that sounds strange and say ay-sus.
