One is listed under "portability" and the other under "media" in the Asus site. However, their designs and specs look the same and they can be configured in the same way...

What is the actual difference between these two designs?

Can you be more specific, ie N50xx M50xx

On Asus Global's website you can add laptops to "compare". Then use this feature to side by side compare the differences.

A cursory look shows that the M series has a few more standard features and optional features than the N series with a couple of major exceptions:

The N series has an e-sata port, and 12.5mm sata hard disk vs 9.5mm on the M series.

Judging by the fact that the N series has a few more up to date versions such as the optional bluetooth as well as:
    Virus & Tool Software

    M Series:
    Norton™ Internet Security 2007
    Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0
    NERO 7 Essentials

    N Series:
    Norton™ Internet Security 2008
    Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.0
    NERO 8 Essentials
    Power2Go

That would seem to be a good indication that the M Series is a "2007" model and the N Series is a "2008" model.

I would guess that the M series is on it's way out. At least comparing the M50Vn to the N50Vn.

    Cheers.

N series are newer and better than the M series. They don't make M ones anymore I believe, the N series is the successor.

Ahh, cool. Wonder why N are considered "portable" as opposed to the M's "media". Thanks.

Just a classification, doesn't really mean anything. Some N50 models are quite capable gamers, but they aren't listed as so.

I wish they had the 9800m on one of these, it would be so much better than any other option...

The ability to double as a frying pan is an unfortunate side effect of that :p

The AMD 4650 is pretty capable...

Of course my focus is squarely on the new 4860.

    Originally it was M & G
The G series was for Gaming and the M series was a new series for Media.

The Media series boasted some extra media controls, a neat illuminating touchpad, and had a lower power graphics module in it, this was when asus really upped the game as both units started coming with a large hdd, lots of ram, and nice features for a cheap price.

Later down the road the N series came out as a new ultra affordable middle road laptop, so it ends up being very similar to the M series for the N50 but it ranges all the way from the little 10" N10 to the powerful N50 with a N80 inbetween, all of them share the same basic design but features can vary greatly depending on the model you get.

There has not been one unhappy N customer yet, infact I say thats one of the few laptops i have never even seen a single complaint about.

There are lots of N50 models listed HERE

I was looking at the C2S as an option to get if I didn't want a more powerful GPU. It's sexy!
Been out of stock for a while there, though.

Yeah the VF is going to be all the rave now since it comes with the new Nvidia GT130 card.

If you see something you want there though, dont hesitate to ask them for it, they may be able to special order it for you, or just have some in the back not out for sale.

Asus just stops shipping things sometimes due to new models being out, but they can maybe order it for you if there are still some unsold units.

    1366X768 is really low, though.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

A pattern I see is they almost always seem to release a good model with a low resolution first, then a couple months later let out a refresh with a higher res screen, so keep an eye out.

This was my biggest complaint about the M50 vs G50 when they both first came out was the M50 had a lower res screen, but it was later fixed with a new model.

That way, it may give users an incentive to upgrade their notebook to a higher resolution model. It's good marketing if you ask me.
