Hi,
I've been looking at the M5N and I'm a little confused. What are the differences between the M5N, M5Ne, and M5Np?
I saw an M5N on eBay, and I thought it'd have wireless B and G, but it looks like it only has B. Does that mean it's an older model? And if so, is it possible to upgrade it so that it could work with G?

Is there any way to tell from the S/N if it's an M5N or M5Np?

Let me make this simple for you.
M5ne - never existed ....... the "e" however was used in the S5ne and that standard for the ULV cpu.... it had a 1.0ghz ultra low voltage cpu soldered onto the board.... no way to upgrade the S5ne model (cpu wise anyway)
M5n/Np --- same system internally.... Units produced before August of last year only had B wireless.... N units built after that time and all NP units have B/G.. It's not impossible to upgrade, but I'll tell you you'll want to chuck the notebook off your roof if you try to do it... It's the LAST piece to come off the notebook.. of another way to look at it is, it has to be the FIRST piece to go back on!.... It's removable, but from all I know.. I'm the only person who's ever done it.
The Np has a slightly larger keyboard... you can see them in the link below.. If you're getting a notebook now, you'll want the M5np... the keys were reworked to fix some complaints by people that some of the buttons were too small..... but both are ok... the Np just points out and fixs what some people didn't like.

Hope that helps.

Yea actually... the M5np's model name on the unit itself should read "Z3100" - in the US -- but on the serial number sticker it should read Model: M5200NP

Is there any way to visually tell if it has the Wireless G?

no....... you'd have to see what card was in the device manager or see the actual card (which means it would have to be taken apart)

Hey, I wanted to try to help so I searched and noticed that ebay thing you were looking at... knew it was the right one when I noticed you asking what I told you.
I don't want to get involved, that isn't a US model, which means it doesn't won't have a US keyboard. I say this because I know for an absolute fact, we had the only 10 white chassis' ever avaialable in the US..... I've got one, and I think 5 might have sold.... this isn't one of them because those systems sold for over 2 grand, not even two months ago, so I can say this isn't a customer of ours.
Issues you have.....
1. no warranty.. it's gone, even if this is legit and he is the only owner.. it's not passed to you.... however he is telling you it is, so beware of that.
2. he doesn't mention the hard drive... at all... size, speed... nothing.
3. he's including software valued at $1,000's.... there is no way that is legal software and you can get in deep for buying it.
4. he says, "new - sealed in box" .... but at the bottom says it doesn't come in an Asus box........ there goes the sealed in box theory.
5. he shows a white m5 picture and then below shows a white s5... fishy.
6. if this notebook comes with just what he lists (which is usually what you do on ebay)... this is an M5n (old) but somehow white (has to be from germany or china) .... but he only really states this is an M5 with a 1.5ghz cpu... my guess is it's not a 2mb dothan, but rather an 1mb banias cpu, and 512mb of ram.. which means an extra 256mb stick....... even if everything else is legit and this was brand new (but atleast 9 months old since it's an M5n ,, not np)... it would be worth maybe $200 more..... and thats if it were an NP with a dothan cpu and a warranty. He makes no mention of having a hard drive, ac adapter, battery... things of that nature.... things which if not included would make this an absolutle wash...... If this system is loaded with all that other software, you can't say whether the OS is legit either... so you can't figure that into what it's worth...... this is really fishy.
Thanks,
Justin

Right.. don't worry I don't think anyone else would bid on it knowing what I said.
-didn't see 40gb after that line yesterday.. maybe it was added.
- you're buying it with the stuff on it...... it can't be new then.... Am I the only one who sees the inconsistances with this auction? You are better (legally) to buy the notebook without a hard drive.
- You're out of luck warranty wise becasue you get it (and keep it) if you buy it from an authorized dealer to begin with..... even if it was new you're not getting the warranty.
Looking at what he said.... the notebook is 9 months old at best... the only thing I can bet on is that there is an M3, with an extra 256mb stick of memory and whatever cpu it had.... i wouldn't pay for the OS at all, and you don't know what is coming in the box...... and without a warrranty, you're not saying much to find out you're just getting a barebone, a cpu and ram....... maybe a 40gb hard drive...... If this was $200, I'd say bid on it.
Thanks,
Justin

Ugh, I was hoping not to draw too much attention to it since I was hoping that no one else would bid on it. He did tell me that it was an M5N, not the M5Np.
I thought he did post specs for the HD:
Hard drive - 2.5" 9.5mm IDE HDD ATA 100 with S.M.A.R.T. support, 40 GB
The software isn't an issue 'cuz I was planning to put XP Pro on it anyway.
I figured it was probably not from the U.S. which isn't a big deal to me. And I'm probably being nit-picky, but you say that only China and Germany offer the M5N in white. Doesn't Taiwan have it too? (Maybe I'm getting too much into politics, with the whole China and Taiwan being separate thing.) But I guess his global warranty thing is down the drain either way.
Last question then: You said "it would be worth maybe $200 more." Do you mean that you don't think it's worth more than about $1200? I wasn't planning on spending too much more than the opening bid.

I just wish there was a rebate on the M5N instead of the S5N. You guys don't price match right?

I hear you. I can't imagine we're any more expensive for what we're offering.
