Hey guys I got my notebook back today from a major overhaul. The whole motherboard was replaced, body work replaced, only thing the same is the keyboard and screen.
Everything is great and I'm happy, since I had no idea I had a problem with my videocard, Asus tested it and noticed it was wacky, while in the shop.
Anyhoo' anyone do any research into all the different types of x700's there are for notebooks and Z70Va's in particular?
My unit before I sent it in had default clocks of 350/300 core/mem. I have no idea what bios revision was in it before hand because I never checked. After getting my system back my core/mem has changed to 344.25/330.75. The core is basically the same, but the mem was bumped up. Does this mean there were different versions of the x700 put into Z70Va's using different vram, or just a different updated bios revision?
I recall someone else with a mobile x700 in their system state their default clocks the same as my new system.
I pasted my info above from CCC information.
Any info appreciated, I'm just curious, not too important.![]()

try downloading a program called ati clock, click the button that says set defualt . Asus might have changed the clocks when they were testing it.
-
No, that's not it matt. Everything is set the way it was on my system before I sent it in.
I was just playing with powerplay and the default core/mem clocks are different. I got a new motherboard put in, so I got a new videocard as well since it's soldered on. This new GPU chip is different from what I had before with different vram, or just a different bios for the gpu.
No big deal about the default core/mem clock change, but just curious, since I have something different.
Edit:: Oh yeah forgot to add my max mem clock has decreased from the old card. Again no big deal because I don't intend to leave my system overclocked all the time, but very curious as to what the differences are between this new GPU and my old one. -
My z70va is sleeping at GF house atm. Will check that once it gets here tomorrow.
Btw, yesterday i notice a green line to the right side of the screen when watching a DVD. Not sure if it was there before but i just saw it last night. -

A small number of z70va's was released back a few months with 256mb dedicated ram instead of 128. I never did get the chance to confirm it was physcial not hyper but most of these units arrived in canada from what i heard.
-
Well I know that there are different DeviceID's, my A6Va had a 5653 card and my new M6Va got a 5652, just like yours.
-
May just be a updated BIOS where Asus bumped up the stock memory clocks.
The memory chips on my X700 are actually these K4D553238F-GC2A chips rated to work up to 350MHz, so by default they are underclocked 50MHz.
Edit: Copied what I got from CCC, my BIOS info is different than yours:
-
Whoa Eddie are you serious~!?!?!?!? A small number of x700 in Z70Vas with 256mb dedicated ram? Hope I got one of them.
I doubt it, but I noticed I have the same bios version for my x700 as Chazman does in his x700 256mb version in his Sager.
I'm going to try to find out if I have 256mb, but my information tools say 256mb hypermemory so I'm guessing I have 128mb.
I must investigate more. -
Yes, I've got the normal x700 with 128mb vram.
Dang.
So it is just an updated bios that won't let me overclock the memory as high as before, but no big deal, again because that is just for bragging rights since I don't game much on my notebook.
As long as it runs more stable than before I'll be happy. I'm still wondering if it uses the same kind of memory or a different kind.
Anyone know how I would find this out? Chazman get in here~! -
Interesting, I downloaded and installed the newest version of Ati Tray Tools, which was JUST released, wow what timing
.
Chazman and ikovac have discussed in depth about the timings of the x700 memory and changing them for better performance. They talked about lowering CAS timing from whatever it was to 2 or 1 if you can. I just checked my default settings and WOW already at 1.
Maybe the new bios in my x700 has optimized settings. COOL -
It's funny that you mentioned it, Mike. I just noticed the same info in CCC on my z70va, BIOS version and all. It's really weird because System Information says it has 256 MB of adapter RAM, and 3D Mark '03 says that the Total Local Video and Texture Memory is 256 MB, BUT, Total AGP Memory is 512 MB. If the other z70va owners can post their results, that'll be a big help
Oh here is a screen shot about the results above: http://img447.imageshack.us/my.php?image=atix7007cd.jpg -

Try going into the BIOS on boot up, it should tell you the 'real' amount of video memory (non-HM) in there.
My X700 256MB GDDR2 has clocks of (default) 351:331, but I overclock to 400:392 most of the time when playing games. Haven't had any problems with that, works fine. GDDR2 is better at overclocking than DDR, at least at these speeds.
I would also try running a 3DMark05 test, Mike, see what your score is. Try to use the same drivers as you did when you last ran it (before you sent it in) for a fair comparison.

drak0n DUDE you've done it again...made me jealous that is. Eddie from Geared2play said there were some Z70Va's that came with 256mb x700's, but most went to Canada he said.
I think you have one you lucky son of a....
Congrats though~! -

I checked mine and it doesn't say it. Checked all the menus and none have any info on the video memory. Chaz, do you mind posting a shot of the Display section in Furturemark SystemInfo and Microsoft System Information? Thanks!
Edit: Mine defaults to 350/331 too. Don't know if that says anything. -
Mine defaults to 344.5 or something core, and 331ish mem.
CAS is at 1. I tried messing with the new Ati Tray Tools, but I just get freezing, so I'm not using it anymore. My max memory overclock dropped by 10mhz.
Oh well. -
I have the following: rel9.10.2.6/CL186575
So Mike you have a later BIOS than me. I wish I could get a BIOS and a way to change the clock. As is though, I have my machine automatically kick up to 400/355 (and I can increase it to 420/370 for most games; there are a few that cause my GPU core to heat up over 95 C which I don't like even though it could take up to 110C). -
Whoa man your core goes up to 420???? Yikes, I haven't tried that high yet.
I'm waiting until my new drive is in tomorrow so I can reinstall windows fresh. I'm having a lot of problems with my windows installation, since they replaced the motherboard and all sorts of other stuff, so a new install seems in order to compliment all the new hardware.
I used to be able to hit 370mem, but no more, alas. Similar performance so not a big deal -

Wow, 420 core is very high. I would be careful with that -overclocking the core creats sometimes more than wanted heat. I would make sure you have a cooling pad - I don't overclock without one.
Anyway, here is the screenshot:
I had my video card overclocked when I took that BTW, those aren't my stock. -
Thanks a lot, Chazman. It's weird that 3dmark '05 reports your total agp memory as 256 mb, but mine as 512 mb. Does that mean it's a 256 mb x700 + 256 mb hypermemory? Unless it's just the bios.
-
nice overclock ChazMan! Yeah i'm lucky, my core goes pretty high! I monitor the core temperature, and as I said, I don't let it get past 95 deg C. My memory sucks though! I had a z71v with 600MHz DDR Hynix memory (underclocked by default to 500MHz) and although my core wouldn't go past 350MHz, my RAM hit around 795MHz before having problems. These Z70va's have Samsung 700MHz DDR and 740MHz (370*2) is the absolute highest it will go. In fact, if I try to even hit 750MHz, it starts to have problems, which is another reason I've decided to use 400/710 (a.k.a 400/355) for solid stability. I wish I could run it at 400/800 (400/400) for synchronous operation. Anyway, with those high numbers, I get over 3000 in 3DMark05.
I want an x1600 though. I cannot believe that some people are hitting over 5000 in 3dMark05!!!! -
You get over 3000? Oh wait, you have a 2.26Ghz processor, so that's probably why. I can't hit the 3000 level. Not yet anyways, just have to see once I get my new harddrive and a fresh install of windows to play with.
-
Yeah, the 2.26GHz CPU and 2GB of RAM definitly helps. At stock speeds, I get around 2650.
Different versions of x700 in Z70Va's???
