Hi
I would like to ask you guys about diffrences in performance. I have 4200 HDD and 2x512@533. I think about gettin 7200 HDD + 2x1GB@667 but only if this operation will give me noticeable speed increase. Is it worth upgrading or the diffrences will be marginal.
Thanks

going from a 4200 to a 7200 rpm hd you will definitely notice an increase in boot up times, as well as accessing larger programs. the ram will also help with that too. i think once you do that, you pretty much have all the bases covered with regards to speeding up your W3J.
core duo+2 gigs of ram+ 7200 rpm hdd means you're gonna have one fast notebook.
if you do go for it, maybe you should upgrade one component at a time and then both. then document the results as well as how much battery time you lose and how much increased heat output there is. i'm sure a lot of soon to be W3J owners would be interested in the results and possibly upgrading. -
It should give you a tremendous increase in performance.
BTW, I notice you have Altec Lansing GT5051 speakers. So do I, and I love them! -
@ Jetstar : Hehe I even wrote a message to you with request of your opinion about those speakers
But I bought it anyway and they really rock!! Right now there's a James Bond on TV and sound is going from Altec speakers(via Creative DDTS100 sound decoder where I set DTS Neo:6 Cinema Mode) and it really goes surround!! I'm very impressed!!
And about memory and hdd. I want to create world fastest 14" notebook and that's why I'm asking(fastest in games of course)
-
You will definitely notice a speed increase. And if you use it for games.. the load times will be faster and your FPS will increase.
-
mastha212: I am sorry, but I never got such a message from you,..., otherwise I would have replied. That's weird. What were your questions? I am glad you bought those speakers. They are totally out of this world. I have mine hooked up to a Creative Audigy 2ZS for Notebooks. The sound is amazing!
About creating the world's fastest notebook,..., hard drive speed and RAM size are definite factors. And if you havent done so already, you should overclock your X1600 graphics card. That should jack up the performance. Good luck with it! -
Hmm indeed that's weird. I'm sure I wrote it. I just wanted ask about your opinion, how good surround they produce etc. But nevermind. I agree that they are awsome - only sub could be stronger, I miss the one from Z-2300. Ok, but this is not we should take about in this topic. I've already been searching for a cheapest Corsair 667 I can get. About OCing X1600 I've did it - I'm first in 06 in X1600 Mobility category so I'm quite happy
-
You'll notice a big improvement in performace jumping from 4200rpm -> 7200rpm. You may not notice much improvement from 1GB 533 -> 2 GB 667. But saying that RAM makes a difference in games but less so in applications.
Upgrade HD first, ram 2nd if needed. -
@mastha212... didnt u get the notebook from one of the UK resellers? then how come the ram is 533... ive bin to a couple of resellers on the high street and they told me that ram is 667.. weird...
-
They told you so or you actually checked this?! :> I want to change 2x512 533 to 1x1gb 667 + hdd 7200. And do you know what is absolutely fastest 2,5 hdd?? I don't care about noise or battery life - only performance matters.
-
thats what they told me... o well i guess they were lying...
secondly i wouldnt install a 7200rpm hd.. there might be tons of head issues involved... why not go for 5400? i havent checked up on 7200 ones but would definitely go for this one (5400).. Seagate Momentus ST9100824A -
What do you mean by "tons of head issues" ?? I googled something about it and Momentus series is the way to go.
-
well im not an expert but i do think that its not advisable to install a 7200 rpm in a laptop not originally designed for that specific drive... a 7200 drive would give out more heat than a 5400 or 4200... just my 2 cents
oh and if you r still in the Uk this might be a cheap ram upgrade...
http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=2208 -
and let me know if u find a cheaper ram option .. in the uk that is
-
Heh I ordered it via internet but thanks a lot for a link. Besides I have this Corsair for exaclty the same price in Poland so dont worry
And about hdd : if someone tell me FOR SURE that 7200 is a bad idea then I won't buy it. I think I will place an order on Monday.

CalibratedComa Notebook Evangelist
I think he meant HEAT ISSUES, not head issues...and the W3J is already quite an animal for It's size. You should really consider going with the 5400RPM Seagate he mentioned...these drives are putting out performance numbers that come VERY close to competing brands 7200RPM offerings. In the end It's all up to you, but with all you've done so far, stuffing a 7200RPM drive in there and gaming hard on it might just be asking too much from this 14" system!!! Good luck
-
I guess you're right. I think I will take Momentus 5400.3 80GB + Corsair 1x1GB 667, this should be the perfect compromise between speed and battery saving. And maybe later will add second 1gb stick.
-
oh oh... HEAT HEAT .. obviously not head lol... sorry about that...
-
About the ram I also think it depends where you buy it, the one in Totenham Crt RD London deffinately had 667mhz ram, I bet some resellers swap out the 667Mhz ram and replace with cheaper RAM in there???
Anyway I would go for Segate, I saw a review that said the segate momentus 5400 rpm on random access times was just as quick as a Hitachi 7200 rpm drive
You should check out this, aparenty Segate are making new perpendicular drives which will hold more storage and have faster access times, I dont know when they come out, but worth a bit of research, unill then I am fitting mine with 2gb 667 RAM and I have two Segate Momentus 5400 drives I got in Thailand earlier this year, one running in my existing laptop (which does run a bit hotter than my Hitachi 4200rpm, and the other I will be putting in the W3J optical bay.
Has anyone got any comparisons on heat that a 7200rpm drive produces over a 5400? anyway from the reviews i have read I am sticking with the 5400rpm drive for now, just to save battery times -
Momentus 5400.3 (3 is for 3rd edition I suppose) is world's first perpendicular drive
and I agree : from reviews it is almost as fast as 7200 but power drain on 4200 level
Status : ordered!!HDD and memory, all for 235$. Don't know if this is much or not, but after upgrade I will sell old hdd and ram for hmm 190-200$ so I guess true cost will be about 40-50$. The only bad thing is that I have to send it to service to change HDD
otherwise I will void the warranty.

Don't know, I wrote an email to them with question about that. But if in manual it's said it will void warranty they should do this for free.
