In a couple of weeks, my employer is sending me to attend a six-week course on digital content creation and animation at a place down in Florida called Full Sail. Anyone ever heard of it? More importantly, how will my Z70va handle such high-level media work? If necessary, I can get a Dell M70 (w/256MB Quadro 1400 Go), through work, but would much rather be able to use my notebook. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

well, i'm pretty sure the z70va's x700 can handle anything they may throw at you, but the quadro will probably be able to do it faster. heck if they're willing to let you use a m70 why not take it? you could always try them both out on something and see which one runs better.

the z70va's x700 will have more than enough power for anything you want to do. the m70, if i'm thinking of the right machne, is a big machine to hull around, although it's quadro 1400 go /w 256mb is faster than the x700. The x700 is aprox equivelent to a geforce 6600 (go) while the quadro 1400 is closer to to a 6600 GT (i.e. it's faster than the x700 in DirectX 9, and even faster than x700 in OpenGL).

Good to know that my notebook can keep up with the stuff I'll be doing. The big reason I'm concerned is that I'm trying to convince work to reimburse me. They typically only pay for Dell computers.

This is classic government for you. They'll pay over $2500 for a Dell M70, but resist forking over $1600 for the Z70va. If I can show that my notebook will handle digital content and animation, I stand a much greater chance of getting the $$ for it. If I can't get reimbursement, my only options are to just swallow the cost myself, or take the M70 and try to eBay my Z70va.

heh or u can take the m70 hope they forget about it and ebay that thing off. i'm sure the amount u get for it is probably more than u paid for the z70va.

Yeah, that's tempting... until a government stormtrooper shows up in my office for an audit. :p

well install 3DMark05 on both laptops and show him how your machine gets the same score or (if you overclock slightly) higher.

Well, I know I may sound like a broken record, but I agree with the fact that your X700 will have plenty of power to do your graphical tasks.

Stick with your Asus! :asus: :centrino:

I followed Flaxx's suggestion and did a side-by-side of my Z70va and the Dell M70 running 3DMark05. I ran a standard test and then an overclock test with the latest ATI and Nvidia drivers. The results were:

    Standard
    Z70va: 2670
    M70: 2625

    15% Overclocked
    Z70va: 2987
    M70: 2880

Guess who got his agency to pick up the tab for his new Z70va??? HA!!!!
