I have tried to use the overclocking feature in Direct Console and after selecting turbo or turbo extreme, within a few seconds the cursor freezes and reverts back to normal. Anyone else had this happen or know what could be causing it? It happens on Vista Premium 64 and Ultimate 32
    Thanks for any info........

    Its the ATK driver.

You need to replace the one that Windows installs using its Windows Update system with the one from the Drivers CD. Asus seem to have customised it slightly and the default one does not play nice with the overclock software.

Of course, you could just use SetFSB to overclock, alot less hassle

If you look in device manager you will find it. Its an interface between the hardware and Windows to allow software some control over hardware settings.

I think its ATK, not got my laptop here to check.

Thanks for the replies. I removed the ATK0100 driver and re-installed but no go. Could it be a different one?
    Thanks

I rather use the Direct Console because its already installed. I hate to install more things that need to run to control hardware, its just asking for other issues...

I want to say I installed all the ATK stuff from Asus and none from the windows update but I will double check.

Anyone got any other ideas on the issue in case its not that?

Well I checked mine and my ATK driver is identical to the one on the Asus CD... Same version, same size, same modify date... So I dont think its that. I even reloaded it off CD just to make sure.

Arg this sux. Such a nice notebook but to many little dumb things... If this was an average user its great, but we are not average, and these are gamer notebooks so should not have to be one... lol

Well, SetFSB only needs to be run once and once set you can close it. It seems to even keep the settings between restarts but not during a power off.

If you find my "G71v has landed at my door" thread, page 3 has details on how to set it up.

When you close the program it is still running though, just no GUI... This is how it keeps the speed, it has a service or exe that it keeps in memory to maintain the settings.

Just like Driect Console is running all the time for the little LED screen above our keyboard and for it to pull battery level... Thats why I liked to use it for OC because its already running so mine as well have it do its job, but my dumb computer wont listen... lol

No, SetFSB just programs the registers on the clock generator with new values and can then be closed. No running task, no services, nothing gets left running. The settings on my G71V even stay overclocked when I re-boot (but not if power is removed).

There is a way to make SetFSB run at startup and then close down again after it changes the settings needed to overclock, this way it does not eat up any memory etc. Don't ask me how to do it as I currently just run it manually every time I want to overclock.

Has anyone resolved this yet? My G50vt has the same problem. Should I try downloading the 3 atk files from the asus site and try those?

Well I reinstalled my C++ stuff also because i found some site saying that may help but still no joy.

Anyway in all my digging found a new ver of Direct Console...

    ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/nb/Apps/DirectConsole/DirectConsole2_VT32_64_081105.zip

Its 2.0.6 and is dated nov, but is not listed on asus yet.. I installed it but seems the same...

Anyway wanted to share so others could try if any problems...

Will everyone who has this problem please open an Asus support ticket?

I opened one but they dont want to help because they say I am the only one with the issue. They also wont help because I reloaded the laptop and its not as was from factory...

I really hate places like that... I told them vista is vista... I put ultimate x64 on it instead of home prem and they wont help... They even admit that they know the base codes and all are the same.

This is what makes people stop buying some brand items... The customer service sucks.

Well I seem to have mine working now thanks to another user here.

He had same setup with raid 0 and was thinking it was the raid but another users was working.

Turned out to be we did not install Power4 Gear Extreme. I installed it and now it works.

If you dont have it give it a shot, bet it solves your problem. If you do have it already try to reload it maybe.

Sad that Asus couldnt tell us this.

Good thing we have other smart people here that know more than Asus does. haha

Glad to hear that my method worked for you too :) Now that this is working for me, it is safe to say that this is the best computer I have ever owned... all the problems I have had were of my own fault. But yea, it is too bad Asus could not help with such an easy solution.

I found it digging around on Asus's FTP's...

They have like 8 FTP sites and they are not all in sync. So have to alwasy jump around and fish in them all, lol. They also dont all have same layout so its a pain.

Some of them you cant just browse neither so have to get tricky on that too.

But after the fact an Asus rep than emailed it to me to try to fix my problems I had in the past but of course I found it on my own already, lol...
