I have the Asus X54C. When it boots up (after a shut-down or restart), it always tries to read the DVD/CD drive, even though it is empty. None of the other brands of laptops I've owned has done this. Is there a way to disable this? Thanks.

primary boot device group: hard disk: hdd
secondary boot device : Cd/Dvd drive
than you have to manually revert the chage when u wants to boot from a dvd -
None of my other laptops have this sound upon boot up, so that's why I'm suspecting the DVD. If anyone else hears this on their Asus laptop, maybe you have some theories as to what the sound is? -
yea i hear that too, blame it to majitsa dvd drive provided by asus upon poweing on or off it makes that tick

As mentioned above, see if removing it from your boot order in the BIOS setup makes it stop. If it doesn't, it may be part of the POST routine or just a hardware quirk for the drive itself.

I've already completely disabled it from the boot order. It seems to do the click sound right before the ASUS splash screen from hibernate, restart, etc. Another thing I noticed is that it does it when I plug in a USB device, which is usually my thumb drive. Why would it try to read the DVD when I plug in a USB device? None of my other machines did this for sure. This is all too strange.

don't worry about it. it's only 1 second.
my lite-on drive does the same thing. It's normal and harmless and won't make you boot any faster disabling it.
some bios have an option where you can disable certain checks, but I don't know if asus bios has that option.
Disable reading DVD/CD drive when booting up
