I just received my barebones Z70VA and a combo dvd/cdrw drive. I have a dvd burner from a Dell laptop that I would like to swap. Has anyone ever removed the bezel from the optical drive? I don't want to have to purchase another one in the event that it is permanently attached. I can't wait to get it up and running. Other than a few fine scratches on the lower case by the front clasp, it is really sharp looking. I might get really fussy and buy a lower case since this was an open box special.

It may be hard to do, as the bezel is firmly attached, sometimes even a part of the OD itself.
However, in most cases notebook OD's are slow and iffy, it may be better to buy a well known and good external burner(3.5" enclosure + the dvd writer). -
I have an external burner , but I where I already have a notebook burner I could use, I was wondering if anyone had tried to take their's off. I had no problem removing the bezel from the z71a. This one seems more firmly attached.

First of all, the problem isn't taking off the faceplate of the OD, it's about having the same brands.... Different brands have different connection points and ejection button locations... If you have the same brand, it will most likely work, however I can tell you from experience, if it's another brand it probably won't.

Thanks Justin for reminding me to check--I ran into that problem before. I have learned to at least start with similar placement of eject buttons, etc. So you don't think I would damage the OD if I remove the bezel? I am currently loading the OS and can't wait to get it going. I can see why it was such a popular machine with such a nice quality of build.

I have switched a Compaq DVD Burner and the one in my Z62F. It was very straight forward, no issues.
Do I dare pull it off?
