With the delay of the Dell Latitude D820 launch I am thinking of buying an Asus as the notebooks come highly recommended by the members of these forums.

My main concern is the quality of Asus after sales support. I called the five Asus retailers in Vancouver Canada asking what the cost of an extended warranty was and all said that Asus do not offer an extended warranty support plan.

I then called a supplier in Toronto who quoted me $ 199.99 for a two year extended warranty, but could not answer some basic questions and gave me a 1-888 number to call.

It took 20 minutes for the person who answered my call to determine that the individual who could best help me was probably on lunch and hooked me up with their voice mail. I have left two messages. I still have not received a call back.

I have been spoilt with Dell. I have Gold next day on site support plan – have never been kept holding for more than 5 minutes before speaking with a technician and next day on site means next day on site support. Over three years my down time has been minimal.

What is the quality of Asus extended warranty support? Any war stories?

It depends what type of laptop.

The barebon Built On's are warrantied by the dealer themselves and their warranties usually cost differently, depending on the dealer.

For ASUS ENSEMBLE laptops, they all have 1 year warranty, and the $199 is for the 2 years extra if you want it.

Ive found dell support to be one of the poorest in the industry. But that is for home user support. bussiness class support is different but i would never pay the extra from them. Asus doesnt have on site service. so you send your laptop in and it gets fixed. Probably like a week without a laptop. it is good support though better than HP DELL IBM or any other home support. again which is different from the bussiness class support.

Asus offers a 2 and 3 year extension on laptop warranties, available through your reseller.

Internationally it's actually a 1 or 2 year "extension" - making for a 2 or 3 year warranty....... but in the US they choose to only offer the 2 year extention (making for a 3 year warranty) and it needs to be bought, filled out, and mailed back to Asus within 15 days of the purchase of the system.

sorry, poor wording, i should have said it the way you did.

always purchase your warranty with the laptop - it is the same for every other whitebook manufacturer I can think of.
