Typo Title: Does laptop chargers affect GPU performance?

    Hi Everybody,

I have this laptop Asus X550L i7 4510u, win 8.1 with 8gb of ram and GPU Nvidia GT 840m(class 2 in Notebookcheck).

Everytime I play games like Dota 2, AC 2 or CoD Black Ops 2 while the charger is plugged-in (with or without battery) for about 5~10mins, the fps suddenly drops from 50~60 to 20~30. And the game goes real slow. Even at selection screen. But back then, the laptop is playable without this issue.

When using only with battery, the performance is stable. However, battery will only last for about an hour or two, which sucks.

I even tried to set the power management to Balanced or High Performance, already checked the advanced settings. And I always run the apllication using the integrated graphics (gt840m)

Using GPU-Z i monitored the GPU performance. As I've observed. It seems that it was due to Performance Capping, it suddenly gets set to Pwr(Power). Temperature isn't even at overheat stage, it just changes to Pwr out of the blue.

Above is the included stock charger of my Laptop. Since its too big, it sometimes goes off the wall and drops on the floor (this is a big con for this kind of chargers).

With all that said, is it possible that due to sudden dropping of the powersupply, ampere charging of the adaptor is degraded which is causing performance issue?
Is there a way to test the charger if enough power is provided to the computer?
    Can it be fixed?

Thank you very much you guys!

The AC Adapter is designed to be enough power so you get full functionally from the components.
What are you CPU/GPU temps like while you get the FPS drops, it could be a result of throttling.

When plugged in your GPU/CPU will be clocked higher so as above you could be hitting thermal limits while you are plugged in.

I haven't checked the CPU temp but for GPU it as i've checked it goes around 58~63°. I'll try to log both and will get back to this post.

    UPDATE:
CPU Core Temp ranges Min 57~ Max 80° while playing CoD Black Ops 2

    Here's a screenshot of HWMonitor
    [IMG]

And Here's a file log from GPU-Z you can see that the core clock suddenly dropped, that's where the FPS starts to drop

    UPDATE:
Tried different charger, with higher Amperes. Issue still persist. So I conclude this is not a charger problem. Next time I'll try reverting NVIDIA Drivers and will observe what's gonna happen.

    UPDATE:
Found the root cause. Reverted my driver from 347.52 to 344.75. It seems that the GPU have issues with the latest driver.
