Does the sleep feature, or hibernate feature cancel torrents? or interrupt them?
-
Both will. Hibernate pretty much means the notebook is off - but everything that was opened/running will be saved and cached onto the hard drive so when booting it back up, it'll take alot quicker and you'll be exactly where you left off.
Sleep means the everything is off but the RAM where everything you last did is saved to, so it needs power to run.
They are both very similiar, as they both stop and save everything you were last doing to shut down, but still be able to boot up quickly to where you left off. The main difference is that Sleep takes power(though very little) to power the RAM, while Hibernate saves what the RAM was doing onto the HD so nothing is powered. Sleep also boots up faster because the RAM is still on. -
so if i'm downloading, let's say 8.2gb at 49kb a sec i should just shut my screen off and let it run throughout the night? or is that really bad for the laptop?
-
Yea, shut it off but don't close the lid since air circulates through the keyboard.
-
thanks a lot for the info, love this site!
-
yea thats what i normally do, shut the screen off but leave the lid open.
-
I usually close the lid whenever I don't use the computer and it's on 24/7 loading torrents and whatnot.
-
Yes, we had another discussion some time ago about lid closed vs. lid open and we decided it's good either way, but check your temps when first using with lid closed).

Also, (on a side note) you should be able to get much better speeds on BitTorrent if you're downloading even a semi-popular file. If you haven't already, follow the directions here to configure port forwarding to get your speeds way faster.
