Hi,
In looking for a "netbook" I was debating between the MSI Wind and Asus eee 1000H but then came across the N10.
Anyone got one yet?

ASUS N10 will be released in North American in about a week. Key features are LED backlight LCD, On/Off Switchable Hybrid Graphics and HDMI support.
-
Any idea on price?
-
Pretty good pricing by asus i must say. Worth the upgrade everytime...

Meh with the 1000H being under $500 with everything except the finger print reader and dedicated graphics I do not see it being worth the premium personally.
You can add the finger print reader to the key features EXcaliber
I am loving my 1000H by the way. Tossed 2gb ram in it, a 250gb HDD, did a small mod for cooling and its holding a ton of music/games for me (snes, genisis, playstation) looks good, feels good, long battery.
Despite the fact I am a power user who has a super powerful desktop and the G50V wich is a pretty darn strong notebook, I like the EEE more just due to its charm and super small size. I pretty much take it everywhere.
Whats really sad is my EEE speakers are louder than the G50V -
ViciousXUSMC, I am thinking to get the 1000h winxp for my sister as a gift. It is 480 at newegg now. Would you suggest to get the n10 for $120 more or go ahead with the 1000h? The main concern for me is just the style, look, and weight. She doesn't need all the extra features such as HDMI or fingerprint reader.
Thanks! -
Hey Vicious, have you tried the 1000H's VGA out on large monitors like wxga+/wsxga+? From the Eeeuser.com forums, a topic says that the VGA out on the 1000H isn't very good on higher resolutions (doesn't support anything above 1600 x 1200, blurriness, etc), and I want to know what you think.
The N10 appeals to me because of the HDMI out. I'm about to purchase myself a good $250 22" monitor, and I would like to try to get the best out of it if I can. Otherwise I may end up with a desktop and the 1000H. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
The other difference (A1/2) is A2 reportedly ships with the 6 cell battery, rather than 3 cell. It almost certainly sticks out the back, as the 3-cell is going to be made for flush position. I highly doubt that a 9 cell is ever going to be produced, as this would too heavily unbalance a 10" subnotebook.
It's going to be interesting to see what battery life Asus manages to squeeze out of these things, given their propensity toward subpar battery time in the remainder of their entire product line. -
Hey Vicious where do you get the Rom and what emulators do you use for your playstation? Thanks for the info.
-
Any word on the approx. battery life on the N10? -

I think you sort of answered your own question tho, she does not need all the extra features, so the EEE 1000H is probably a perfect fit.
I would strongly suggest you buy it from one of the Asus resellers here on the forums rather than Newegg tho. -

I dont even know if I can test it very well, my monitor at home is a 37" HDLCD using dvi, and I have a hdmi input cord for my big laptop to plug in.
The only tools I know off hand I have is our LCD projector here at work but its only a low res projector and my step dad has a standard 17" monitor and so its not a very high res ether. -

I never have used power save mode or turned off wifi & bluetooth and I have stayed on there for over 4 hours. So I think if your using it for word processing at school or something you can get 5.5-6 hours.
If your web surfing and stuff I say about 4.5-5
It last a pretty long time, and its a small battery and not very heavy. So if you really needed more battery life, I would not invest in one of the very expensive after market 8/9cell batterys but instead just get a 2nd stock battery. -
I am definitely keen on the release of the N10.
Truth be told, I own a Sony SZ that I paid WAY too much for. The selling point for me was a "portable" machine that I can game on. For me, that means, playing World of Warcraft at native res anytime/anywhere I want to. It did it's job admirably.
However, I've since picked up an Acer One. Let's just say that I'm completely sold on this form factor. The ability to just grab it and go with such ease. AS small as the SZ is, I still hesitated taking it with me. Netbook sized machines are a completely different beast for me. I bring my One to a local sports bar to watch the games and track my fantasy teams. There's no way I would have dragged the SZ along. Give me the ability to do what I can on my SZ (minus the DVD burner of course) in a supremely portable package? Game over so to speak (for me at least). -

Yeah we have Ken (gentechpc) and Justin with BTOTech here. Both are good reputable people, its better to buy thru them than newegg so you get customer support. Also they may be slightly cheaper.
I have bought 4 laptops from gentech so far. I have not bought from Justin but have talked to him some he is a nice guy. -
Thanks a lot!!!

I have hit 7 hours but thats really pushing it. I found that the screen is completely usable at 0% brightness(which is odd, since 50% brightness seems only a bit fainter then 100%). While I was on the plane from Munich back to Toronto, the flight was about 7~ hours, and it lasted me the whole flight. WiFi/BT off, screen at 0%, power saving mode, disabled alot of programs, and I disabled all the USB port, the VGA port and the SD card port, and watched Top Gear episiodes from the HD(.mkv 720p I believe). Had a battery warning about 40 minutes before landing, but it lasted til they told all passengers to get ready for landing where I turned it off. -
Personally, i got about 4.5 hours playing various media content with screen at 25% and at power saving mode. I did not turn off wifi, usb, card reader, etc... -

So we are in agreement that the battery life rocks.
That was the main thing that help me back on getting a MSI wind because only the 3cell battery was around.
It was so worth the wait tho the 1000H is great. -
Yeah, I chose the 1000h over the Wind because of the battery situation, plus the ability to upgrade RAM and hard drive without voiding warranty.

2 screws to open it up, so easy... -
Does it come with any recovery cd or winxp cd?
Did you guys re-install the xp for a fresh start? -

The only hiccup I've had was that my touchpad is broken. Well, aesthetically. The bottom right part of it is raised and doesn't fall in its bezel completely flat. That and the hot keys at the top of the keyboard area is slightly raised, as if something was loose or not put in properly...
I do feel that the 1000H is slightly thick and chunky, I have no real problems with it for anything besides the screen resolution. -
wait!!! so the Asus EEE 1000H can play 720p file with out any problems? Can you all say that again. I want the N10 just for 720p files but if the 1000h can do it I will be in heaven.

I have heard more say that it wont handle 720 than that have said it will.
However it GREATLY depends on what kind of encoding it uses, your player, your setup (background resources) and the movie itself (more stuff going on at once is harder to play)
Id say do not depend on the N10 or 1000H to play 720p content. But it will play 480 dvd quality stuff all day with no problems. Plus the screen is not even 720p so its just waisting 720p stuff.
You can overclock the EEE 1000H with a few different programs. SetFSB works, EEECTL works, and I would bet clockgen works too. Some get the 1.6ghz cpu up to 2ghz at that point 720p should be easier to handle.
I personally rip my movies to be 700mb like torrent files usualy are with xvid encoding and they come out in dvd like quality and take up very little space and play fine.
I can post a guide on how to do it at some point, but there are guides out there already so I did not feel the need. -
Do you feel the need to reinstall the xp or is ok to just uninstall the unnecessary programs that comes with the machine? I always worry/curious what hidden programs that come with the machine that I need to be aware of.
-
In my experience, it's usually clean just to uninstall any unnecessary programs with Asus ensembles.... not as invasive programs like other vendors.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yeah I actually had all of 2 things to uninstall I think.
-
I was ready to buy the 1000H series, but the N10 with its NVidia graphics card caught my eye. I'm not a gamer, but the occasional gaming would be nice. As much as I love my Asus EEE 701, it couldnt play any games.
http://www.excaliberpc.com/588596/asus-n10j-a1-10.2-notebook.html
ps. since Asus doesnt consider this a netbook, you still get the Asus 360 notebook service program and 1yr accidental warranty....this and the video card should be worth the extra premium cost. -
thx -
Asus N10 gets reviewed!
http://www.mobilecomputermag.co.uk/20081001949/asus-n10.html -
Is the N10 NVidia graphics card comparable to the Asus W3J video card or possibly better? I ask cuz I only play WoW occasionally and it runs fine on the W3J. I'm hoping that the N10 can do the same and be able to handle the Wow expansion coming out in Nov. Any advices?

Just ordered mine (i'm in canada)
ordered the silver 6 cell with the 160gb hdd, plan on ripping it out anyways and throwing a 320 7200rpm drive in there. Got it shipped express so sadly it won't be here before the weekend but early next week i'll post benchs -
My order has shipped, and I hope to have some pictures to share with the forum later this week.

Oh, thanks for the reply. I would have bought the Asus 1000H, but then this little guy came out and since I don't do heavy gaming, just WoW, this would be perfect to whip out a netbook and play WoW on the go. Blast warcrack!

Gentechpc already has a performance review up on their website.

Hmm....1233 in 3DMark06 at 1280x1024....that sounds a lot lower than most notebooks with the 9300M GS. I guess thats because of the much slower CPU though, since 3DMark06 was supposed to be more dependent on CPU as well.
Pity there isn't a wPrime result, though we already know the Atom would be blown out of the water by any of the C2Ds. (And that might even be an understatement...) -
Browsing the reviews from this site i've come up with a few scores of similar graphics cards to the 9300M GS
F8P HD 2400
Score of 1511 (probably 1280x800)
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4283
F9Dc 8400M G
No graphs but user says around 1100
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4122
F9S 8400M G
Score of 1704
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4083
W7S 8400M G
Score of 1082
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3885
Atom + 9300M GS @ 1280x1024 = 1233
The 9300M GS scores quite comparable seeing as its scores are close to these other notebook. Now of course i'm sure it would score much better with a different cpu, and the score of 1233 is done @ 1280x1024 im' sure most of the above reviews used the default screen resolution on the notebook (1280x800) so the scores would be a bit higher. Now having said that it is 3DMark and it isn't the best tool for judging performance but at least its somewhat standard across the boards. Also whats up with the cpu score doens't really look like it gave one, would be nice to know what it scored...
I"m actually quite impressed with the score of 9300M GS and atom, yes it won't break any records but it will suffice for me for some light gaming on the road.
Mine will be here on monday -
gratz Silvr6, hopefully you can take a few pictures and give a short review.
-
I'll be benching the crap out of it as soon as I get it, 3dmark 2001 2003 2005 and 2006, and i'll see if i have any games (don't play a ton) i can run some stuff through with fraps

I'd be really interested in seeing in 3dsMark2001se (make sure you use build 330, the latest) scores please! As long as you can do it at say 1024x768 as that's the default and standard resolution...
That should be a very good GPU-power indicator, especially for older games...
Edit: I've found someone else report 3Dmark01 score at 1024x600x32 @ default settings, it was 7887. Not bad, curious how much a GMA950 usually gets...
Edit 2: Seems that Eee's with those 630Mhz Intel cpus OCed to 900 Mhz with GMA950 get around 3100~ in 3dmark01 at 800x480.
Edit 3: Atom 1.6 GHz laptops with GMA950 also score around 3000 (in 3Dmark2001).
Edit 4: On the other end, Dell XPS M1530 with Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz and Nvidia 8600M GT gets around 21'000 in 3Dmark2001. -
shurcooL, those benches you found were from me
The weakest link is the atom cpu, the videocard in being bottlenecked big time, but thats to be expected its gaming performance is what i was expecting it to be, i'm quite happy with the results
Does anyone have an N10 yet?
