Support quad cores? I have read and searched on the G51 from BB not being able to accept quads (what a disappointment) but I have not seen any answers from anyone regarding the G71. Anyone have any idea?

Just to be clear though, your sig states that you have a G51, and not a G71. Also, is it from Best Buy?

It's an A1 variant, so no, his G51 is not from Best Buy.

Unless he has a G71gx-RX05 he hasn't told us about.

Hate to report this one guys, but it looks as if it is the same as the G51- ruined by Asus. The motherboard is again different. Geek Squad and myself took a look inside today- no chance of doing Quad it seems... :(

Different from the other G71s? I would beleive that the mobo is the same and that it is just an older BIOS

FWIW, when I called Asus tech support, they said that the g71gx rx05 would accept a quad core. It doesn't make sense that it wouldn't. Considering BB sold a g71gx with a quad core.

Eventually, I will try, but I'm not interested in voiding my warranty at the moment.

Unfortunately, Asus is doing this to save some money. That's the only reason I can think of. I can't imagine what they save by not including the support, though...

It would have cost them more to have 2 separate motherboards for the g71gx-rbbd09 and the g71gx-rx05.

We thought that it would cost them too much to have separate motherboards for the G51-RX05, A1, and X1A/X2A, but they did it anyway.

True. I'll be pretty pissed if it won't considering Asus's tech support said you can add a quad core though. Also, only one of those models were sold at best buy.

What was it about the motherboard that made you come to this conclusion? The motherboard in the G71 is different compared to what?

I would rather let a semi-trained chimp perform maintenance on my G71GX than some Geek Squad poser.
