I understand that the older W5Ae came with a wireless mouse, and that there was a built in RF generator/detector.
I have the latest model with no mouse or case, and wondered if this one still has the built in RF? I have a number of Logitech mice that have the USB dongle for RF, but it would be great to not have to stuff that thing in a port, ready to break off.

Yep, sure does..... I believe it's part of the wireless utility console... turns on and off with the flip of the wireless on/off switch.
-
Hmmm... I've installed the newest utility from the Asus site v 1.1.0. It very nicely has the bluetooth and wireless LAN there, but no RF.
I've also installed the latest logitech drivers from the ASUS site, and it keeps telling me to plug in a USB dongle.
Also read through the meager posts and FAQ on the W5ae on the ASUS site, and no real clues there either.
Any other ideas? -

It's been a while since I used mine... but I could have sworn it worked with the same flip switch... I mean you could just give asus a quick call, but I'll try to find some time to go and look at mine... RF is built into that unit though... trust me on that.

I have a new W5AE and it didn't come with an included mouse. I'd like to use the built-in RF receiver but can't figure it out either. I have a Logitech wireless mouse at home, but get the same "Plug in a USB receiver" message with the Logitech software when I try to pair them. Anyone know what model Logitech mouse works with it, and how to set it up? Since Asus stopped including the mouse, I wish they'd tell us which mouse to buy!

This should be the mouse in question.... http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2146,CONTENTID=8220

That is the exact mouse I have, but I still cannot get the darn thing to work. Two separate bluetooth mice work just fine, however.
-
This might be a really dumb question - but now I am confused. Don't you HAVE to use the USB dongle thing with this mouse?
-
Not if the notebook has a built-in RF receiver - that's all the "dongle" really is.
-
Another dumb Q then, does the Z63A have the RF receiver, or is it IR?
-
I WISH it had an RF receiver!
Only IR for the Z63a. -
Me too. I had hopes for a minute there. Oh well...
Thanks for the replies, Aurora!

I purchased this mouse and am still having difficulty. When I click on the connect utility on the laptop, I get a message saying I need to plug the receiver into the USB port. Anyone know how to make them connect? It's as if the RF receiver is not on, or the laptop doesn't realize it exists. I did install the updated Logitech software and driver from the ASUS site.
Thanks,

I can't really help you there.... the unit that used to come with the systems were already registered from the factory... there may be something different about the logitech specific one... but there shouldn't be......
Are you sure you have that mouse and not the V200 ? Both mice look the same, but the V200 won't work I don't think. -
No it's not a V200. Thanks for trying. If anyone else has any ideas please let me know. This was a selling point for the laptop and a bit of a disappointment if it doesn' function.
Pretty happy with the W5AE otherwise. -

You're welcome....... did it ever occur to you to call Asus? Their mouse works with it, I know that for a fact....... and it actually works quite well. As long as you have the same one, they'll either be able to tell you how to get it to work or tell why it wouldn't.....

Just a guess: all Logitech RF wireless mouse has a small button at the bottom of the mouse for scanning RF receiver channels. Press it see if it can scan the channels and handshake with the receiver.

... sometimes it takes a fresh opinion to bring out the obvious. That's an excellent point, but I really hope he didn't skip over this. -
Nope, tried that. It doesn't seem like the receiver is having trouble finding the signal, but I can't even get the onboard software to load. It just asks me to plug in the USB receiver. I feel as if the Logitech Connect software doesn't recognize there's a built-in RF receiver.

Um.. I don't think there is a need to use that software.... just use whatever is on Asus' site......
... but give them a call... you've already spent far to long on this and they should be able to tell you how to handle it in a couple minutes. -
According to ASUS tech support on the phone I specifically asked if there was an internal wireless mouse RF receiver in the W5AE and they said no. They said if there was one then it would appear in device manager of which I can find no listing in device manager on my W5AE. Confusing situation.
Does the new W5Ae have built in RF?
