I tried to update to catalyst 6.7 and i got an INF error, i did a search in the forums and found that the x1600 Mobility isn't supported by the drivers. But ive heard of other kids in the forums updating the drivers. What are my options? any thing beside omegas? Also i un-installed Asus Live Update, is that a good thing or a bad thing? Is there a way to set what the Fn+F(n) functions do? Also is it normal to wake the computer up from hibernate by hitting the power button.... sorry for my n00bish questions this is my first laptop...

you might want to try the ATi drivers off the Intel website(just as good as Omegas though its for the S96j not your notebook(what model BTW?). The Fn buttons should work with the ATK100 driver, and lets you use the commands. Well, out of stand by and hibernation, its set on mine via any keys.

your choices are 3...in order of my preference
    1) Stock ASUS drivers..get the job done and very stable.
    2) modded ati drivers...go to driverheaven for details
    3) omega drivers

ASUS is not on the supported list for standard ATI drivers so this is the reason why it probably wouldnt install.

rj686, did you try to install the Catalyst Drivers, or the Catalyst Mobility Drivers? The Catalyst package should include support for all current ATI chips, though there may be differences between the Desktop and Mobility packages (I believe there's also a seperate Catalyst set for Windows Media Center Ed., but that's another story...).

Use must use this direct link to get them - browsing through the site will run a check and it will tell you Asus is not on the supported list:
    http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/

I haven't installed 6.7 yet, but I did install 6.6 without a hitch, and would use the ATI drivers before the Omega drivers, which, as I understand it, are based off the Desktop Catalyst drivers, which as I mentioned were originally written to support the Desktop chipsets.

i wouldn't keep the stock asus drivers..very unstable..a lot of ppl either installed the latest ati ones or the omegas..omegas give the highest scores in 3dmark05 and are stable

latest catalyst mobility drivers work great for me. you do have to use that link because asus isn't a supported manufacturer though.

I havent done any sort of offical benchmarking but just in functionality the new 6.7 catalyst seems to smooth out Oblivion over the old 6.5 Omega drivers for my W3J.

I actually get about 20 3dmark05's better with the cat 6.7's over the omega 6.5's plus why use hacked when performance with the ati's are just as good if not better?

Some people just prefer "hacked" drivers; they like them more for some reason. 20 points is nothing... if you re-run the tests, the scores can go about 50 either way. It is possible to get a better score with ATI drivers and Omegas.

ok, well i think i am going to upgrade my drivers to the new ATI ones, but my question is, what should I do first.

I have stock drivers, so should I download the new ATI ones, then uninstall the stock ones, then reinstall the new ones? Also, isn't there a program that clears your drivers just to make sure there is no lingering affects? Lastly, should i keep my other ATI programs like CCC? thanks in advance

Just yesterday I tried to do that with my Z96J I unistalled the stock drivers, rebooted and then tried to install the 6.7....didn't work  So I called up powernotebooks.com tech support and they informed me that Asus is not supported by ATI therefore the drivers will not work. So installed the omega drivers. However the 3dmark scores were about the same as the stock drivers, just to let you know :)
