    Hey guys,

Well I didn't exactly drop the laptop, I kind of banged on the keyboard with my fist (don't ask )... this was while it was on.

Anyways, I have an ASUS W3V, an now when I start to Boot my laptop I can hear the Hard-Drive spin up a bit but then it shows "Disk error, Press any key to restart" I press any key and it says "Reboot and Select proper Boot device, or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key", I press a key and the sequence repeats :(

BUT I can still go into the BIOS and it detects my Hard-Drive and shows some info about it. Right now I don't have a CD Drive installed so it won't boot to that. For boot devices it gives me the option of HDD (PM-FUJITSU MHU2100AT), ATAPI CD-ROM, or Removable Dev. (I'm guessing that's USB?)

So I'm guessing I should try mounting my HDD using an external device onto another computer? I might just buy another HDD and DVD Drive ( anyone know if this ASUS M3N DVD Drive will fit the W3V?)

Just wondering why the BIOS would detect it, but it doesn't boot... I really need to know if this Laptop will be able to be used again soon because if not, I have to buy a new Netbook to use for school!

Thanks for reading this and your help :)

PS: I could only find this picture of an M3N Dvd drive:

Or even better, will this one fit?

Try booting over USB with a USB disk that has a Live Linux version. That will by-pass the HDD and will load Linux. If that goes well, you will have to replace the HDD. (It is very likely that during the crash, the HDD r/w heads might have crashed into the platters.)

Yeah, using a usb device to boot is your best bet at this point. And you probably did crash the heads by hitting it. Big oops :( You'll be super lucky to get anything off of it. Without sending it to a cleanroom facility, of course. And you better have $$$ and valuable data to bother with all that.

In general all slimline optical drives are pretty much standard. Only the bezel is different and that is usually removable/replaceable from your existing one.

You probably damaged the hard drive, not much you can do unless you have a $1000-2000 to recover the data with a professional recovery service.

Wow thanks for all your quick help, you're much faster than other forums I've been to :)

I phoned the store about that Samsung SN-S082H/BEBN (Black) Slim Internal EIDE 8x DVD±Writer and he said that most internal optical drives won't be compatible and that I should just buy one from ASUS... not sure how much I believe him. I might just buy it and test to see if it works... if not, I'll return it and pay the 15% restock fee.

I'll be buying a hard-drive as well, hopefully one that runs COOL because my w3v is always so hot.

Does anyone know for sure if you can Boot the W3V from a USB device? It only says Removable Device.

The hard-drive data is definitely not worth saving thankfully :)

I had a similar model (Z70V) and it was able to boot over USB so I am pretty much sure yours can do it as well.

In the opposite case, there is nothing you will lose. Just download a Live Linux to another machine, prepare a bootable USB disk with it and try it. Simple as that...
