Hi guys , ha u doin ! .. I know foo fighter has already given a tutorial on how to do it but i wasn't able to ask him a question cuz his thread was locked.. E.B.E locked it and that was a good decision from his side.. The thread could be found here : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=113162 ..

It's been 3 days since i'm browsing the internet to learn how to dual boot but i'm all confused

This was the first link i found : http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystep_guide.htm

His tutorial looks perfect but too bad , most people didn't succeed ..

This was the second link i found : http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2007/10/06/how-to-dual-boot-vista-and-xp-with-vista-installed-first/

Another good tutorial but too bad , some XP errors were found..

    After reading the 3rd link , i completely lost hope : http://www.pronetworks.org/forums/install-windows-xp-in-a-dual-boot-with-pre-installed-vista-t88231.html

Just read his note.. .. I've got an Asus G50VT-X5 Laptop stuffed with a SATA drive :(

I had to check this thread : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=282100#winxp to learn how to dual boot but it only shows how to downgrade :(

I finally found foo fighter's thread but i'm still confused ...

Could someone please answer this question :

Can i dual boot my Asus G50VT-X5 laptop ?.. Does it matter if i have a SATA drive ? ..

Yes and No, in that order. Yes you can dual boot the laptop and no it doesn't matter that you have a SATA drive. Having the SATA drive just adds a few steps to the install. The first link you had at apcmag gives good tutorial for the dual boot install but doesn't talk about the extra steps to get over the SATA hurdle.

XP Pro doesn't support SATA drive so you need to add a driver for it. Since our laptops don't have floppy drives, the easiest way to do this is to "slipstream" the drivers into a new XP pro disk using nlite. Your last link and the one EIement posted have the link to nlite and the link to the driver you need to add. The only thing missing this the tutorial on how to slipstream the driver but it's actually a pretty straight forward process. This link or this link might help for that or a google search will get you lots of info.

    Hope this helps

The tutorial by g51 to xp http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=406314&page=3 looks pretty awesome .. I'm gonna try it right now but before i do , i'd like to add a few questions :

1- If you check g51 to xp's tutorial , you will see that at the end of step 1 , he added the SATA driver to the installation CD .. I'd like to know if it's possible to add all the XP drivers and utilities ( i.e the ones in step 2 ) in the same way as the SATA Drive ?!

2 - Could someone please check the following steps and see if they're correct.. They were written by foo_fighter

    3 - This is a million dollar question :
Do i need a Vista DVD while dual booting ??!!

    Ladies & Gentlemen , i appreciate all ur help !! :)

    1. it SHOULD be possible,

    2. that option /would/ work

    3. to install vista you will need the DVD, yes. and also, using the DVD is an easy way to dual boot. install vista, install XP on partition 2. insert vista boot DVD, get to the setup of the DVD, and do repair installation. it will overwrite the master boot record and give you the option to boot into either system at startup.

well yes u cam slipstream the xp drivers that way
but i highly recommend not to do so as this could harm ur xp installation causing it not to work.so first install xp and then install the drivers.

One last question before i start messing up my Asus.. If you look at step 1 and 2 from this thread : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=113162 , you'll see that foo fighter started by cleaning , partitioning and formatting his drive.. This is all done by inserting his XP install CD .. Now in step 2 his telling to boot from the Vista recovery DVD to install vista on the first partition .. My question is :

Can i clean , partition and format using my XP CD and then boot again using my Vista recovery DVD to install Vista ?! .. Is it possible to boot again as soon as i finish formatting ?? .. Actually, after the Windows Setup program finishes formatting the partitions , a screen appears asking us to continue installing Windows... What do i do when that screen appears ??! .. Shall i exit and insert my Vista DVD at that time ?! ..

Thank you in advance !! :)

you dont need vista dvd, just download the free "easyBCD" and you can dual boot with it.
    edit:
you can just continue installing xp on your 2nd partition when it finished then boot with your vista recovery dvd and install your vista on your first partition, then if xp didn't existed in boot menu, run "easyBCD" and xp.
