I've had my Asus G1s-a1 for quite awhile now and there's been some weird things that have happened here and there; regardless there's also a lot of unwanted junk on my computer.

I was wondering what's the easiest way to reformat? I don't have my vista disc( it never came with one) all i have is a "recovery DVD" and "support cd".

How would i go about reformatting? what is the simplest way? I have all my important files backed up and just need to figure out this whole business. I've never reformatted before so this will be new to me.

    Hi,

If you just want to recover your computer to factory settings, click Info Booth in my signature, then look in theFAQ on that thread; that will lead you to http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=122632#asusrecovery ; That is the simplest way to do it.

Then, you may want to have a look at my Vista optimization guide, for tips on how to optimize your installation.

Vista sucks :D. I just installed XP on my G1S-A1 2 days ago and it is way faster. Team Fortress 2 can run on 1680x1050 reso with all high settings now. With Vista I had to lower graphics...

Anyway just follow these instructions if you want:

If you want to restore your vista install but without any preinstalled software

    * Put in your restore DVD

    * press ESC when you see the Asus logo on bootup, and select your DVD-Drive

    * Follow the prompts

    * When it asks for your driver DVD, reboot your PC

This will give you a clean Vista install, without anything installed. Note that when you first boot into vista it will have a command prompt and some other stuff open, leave it alone till it automatically reboots.

Use your driver DVD to install the stuff you need minus the bloatware like Norton Antivirus, etc

Obviously if you want all this stuff preinstalled just put your driver DVD in when it asks. Also if you have your recovery partition intact, you can just press one of the F keys on bootup which will do the same thing. (I forget which one it is, I think it was F9).

by reboot you mean hold down the power button?

another question, will the drivers for the mouse, vid card, sound card, etc be installed if i follow what you say? or will i have to get all the drivers on my own?

Yes, just hold down the power button, but make sure that you are at the correct spot. You will be able to choose which drivers to install, although IIRC, the mouse does not need your installing a driver. All the drivers you need are on the devices CD.

So i followed everyone's directions. I put in the recovery cd, hit esc at the Asus screen, clicked "Recover to entire HDD in 2 paritions" and then i hit a screen saying in huge letters ERROR. this message was at the top left corner

"Cannot load image0 from src WIM file"

it stayed put, so i force rebooted and tried to go back to how things normally are and then got this message at startup

"BootMGR is missing, please restart computer"

I redid the first step, but instead chose "Recover 1st parition only" and now everything seems to be working fine...

Is there anything to be worried about?

Sorry to bring such an old thread back, but Im having some trouble reformatting my ASUS G1S-A1 and I came across this on Google...

I booted off the restore cd, which went successful. It then asked for me to enter the driver CD, I did. Then it rebooted and loads a black screen for about 3-5 minutes, plays the Vista "welcome" chime and then gives me this error message:

"Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation."

Ive been through this a few times now and its the same problem each time.
    Anyone know whats wrong?

I don't know what is wrong. Some bug or maybe the driver CD is unreadable?

I suggest trying the clean install trick described above; that should bypass the problem. Then install drivers and utilities manually.
