Hey, so i'm a bit of a noob when it comes to computers and such. But, lately my Asus g51vx has been getting hotter and hotter (the gpu mostly from what I can tell). It's as if every week to two weeks, the max temperature of my gpu while under load goes up by 1c. it's been so gradual that i'd just dismiss it and be like (well once it reaches THIS point, then i'll start worrying.) Well, it's reached that point several times now. Used to get a max of 87c, 4 months later, a max of 97c. fun stuff. So, either my gpu is in trouble, or is this probably just a dust issue? I haven't cleaned out my laptop or anything since I got it. I'm about to go get some compressed air. So, how exactly does this work then? Do I need to open up my laptop? Or can I just spray into the intake vents on the bottom and it will come out of the exhaust vent on the side? Do I need to be careful and make sure it doesn't spray the air into it too violently etc.? I read somewhere that you can make the fan spin too fast and break it (bs?). Any help would be greatly appreciated. i really wanna solve this heat issue before the lifespan of it starts decreasing because of my laziness.

I just spray mine with compressed air. I've even taken a vacuum to the vent but I wouldn't endorse that since you're more likely to build up static electricity. You won't break anything by blowing air across the fan unless you physically bash the compressor into it (another method I do not endorse). The way the G50/51's are designed, you'd be better off taking the bottom cover off since the intake does not connect directly to the exhaust (ie: it's over the RAM, GPU, HDD's, etc instead of by the fan), but if you're lazy you don't need to do that either.

    Just don't use water.

You need to open the backpanel and hold the fan down when you blow it with compressed air, do not listen to dtd00d, you can ruin the bearings in the fan.

hm, okay. thanks for the help EIement. by holding the fan down, you basically mean "don't let the fan spin while blowing the compressed air"? and is there anywhere in particular i should or should not blow the air at/into? or is the fan the only thing i really need to worry about?

Only shoot air in the direction that the fan blows. Do not shoot air from the outside as you will be pushing dust back into the notebook. Yes, he means hold down the fan with your finger so it doesn't spin when you are using compressed air.

I really don't think any compressed air is strong is enough to cause any damage... any way you use it.

As long as you get the dust out of the heatsink fins, you should be fine.

Do you not void the Asus warranty by opening the back panel?

Removing the backpanel does not void the warranty.
