FYI, here are some hdtune results of the seagate 160gb 5400rpm drive that I pulled from my asus 1002ha Eee PC. I believe its the same drive in the asus 1000ha.
I have to say, it is pretty dissapointing. I know a netbook is not supposed to be blazing fast, but this is a pretty slow hard drive. While the read speed isn't bad, the access times are rediculously high (22.7ms). Current 7200rpm drives get 14-16ms.
One other thing to take note of when looking at hdtune results from Eee PC's, is to take the results with a grain of salt. I saw this posted on the eeepc forums, but have also tested this myself. As you switch from super-performance, to high performance, to power-saver modes, the hdtune results actually get better. However this improvement is artificial (I think in powersaver you get like 10ms access time which is impossible). The attached results were conducted outside my eeepc, in my thinkpads ultrabay so this is a true measure of the drive's speed.
Needless to say I swapped out this drive with a faster hitachi 7k200 that I have lying around.

seems about right, a 5400rpm drive is going to have lower access times. Though I admit I have not benched a notebook hdd in long enough to forget the normal numbers.

that's actually on par for a 5400.5 Seagate drive in terms of access times. I have 3 of the 320GB's and they all are in the 22ms range. Very disappointing. It has nothing to do with it being in an EEE, I've tested on my Core 2 Duo 3Ghz desktop and my T7400 based laptop also with the same results.

I know its not the EEE, i guess i've just been spoiled with my 14-16ms 7200rpm notebook drives. I thought "good" 5400rpm drives still achieved access times under 20ms

If your reading a solid file though the 5400rpm drive can keep up if its a higher density (like 320 5400 vs 160 7200, or 500 5400 vs 320 7200) the best drive now should be the new 7200rpm 500gb drive though. -
