My girlfriend's G1S-A1 has decided to not turn on, the day before her finals week.

When she powers it on, the mini-LCD screen displays Asus and the side green lights blink, but the screen never turns on and no normal OS noises are made.

She called tech support and they had her remove the battery and press some tiny button in for 30 seconds and try again, to no avail. Their only other solution is to send it in.

She needs a miracle. Does anyone have a solution for her?

Worst-case scenario, she still needs the data off her hard drive. Can anyone recommend an enclosure for it?

I don't know much about laptops, but perhaps you could take out the Hard Drive and hook it up to another laptop/computer to access?

    Just a thought.

I remember seeing that, if it's not the MB then try remove the center cover (2 screws), pull out one stick of RAM at a time to see if it'll boot up, hopefully you just need to send back the RAM.

Take the handdrive out and transfer it to another comp before sending it in?

A SATA laptop disk can be connected up to any SATA-capable PC. However, if this isn't something you're experienced with doing yourself do *not* just start wading in, or you could cause problems for yourself and girlfriend.

Instead, find or hire someone with experience at this sort of thing to retrieve the data you need. Provided the HDD isn't the dead component (doesn't sound like it) then it's straightforward to get the data off the disk, provided someone who knows what they're doing is working on it.

Make sure that everything is removed from the USB ports, the CD drive and the ethernet port. In some cases, these will mess with the boot order and prevent you from getting past the initial Asus splash screen.

I use my 3.5in HD enclosure to pull the data off my friend's laptops all the time. Metal GearBox off newegg. It works wonders, since sata drives have the same port array as desktop drives.

This is a 2.5" disk though. Go to www.newegg.com and buy a Vantec NexStar 2.5" SATA enclosure with a USB interface. Pull the drive from the notebook, put it into the enclosure and then connect it to another computer.

This enclosure works on both 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives. The 2.5in won't screw in (mount holes wouldn't line up), but it does allow for data recovery since the sata/power connections are the same on both sized hard drives.
