to start, here are my specifications:
Asus G50VT X-5 Best Buy Edition
Intel Core 2 Duo @2.13 Ghz OVERCLOCKED to 2.3 Ghz
Nvidia Geforce 9800M GS 512MB DDR3 Vram
4 GB RAM
320 GB 7200RPM HDD
Ok, so i bought this laptop used about 2 weeks ago from E-bay.
When i first started, everything worked fine.
I updated my 9800M GS drivers, as well as everything else.
NOW, my GPU reaches temperatures of 110C under games like Crysis, Just cause 2, Metro 2033.
The games start out fine, from 30-40 FPS, then drop suddenly to 5FPS, and the cycle just keeps repeating. mind you, this happened AFTER i installed new drivers. the new drivers added Nvidia CUDA and PhysX to my card(could that be causing overheating)? this has caused all my games to run slow at times.it is very irritating
anyways, i even put all settingd to LOW, and it still reaches 110C. please help me?
P.S. my GPU idles at 65C in a 70F well ventilated room. While under heavy load, i can feel hot air comin out of the vent, and the vent itself is burning hot.

I think you should try to clean the fan vents. Maybe they are blocked with dust.
Also try to run it without overclocking.
If this does not help then most probably you need to apply fresh Thermal Compound on the GPU and CPU.
If it still has warranty then you should not apply the Thermal Compound yourself becuase you will lose the warranty. -
might sound crazy but reinstall the Asus drivers, i have some issues with nvidia's stock drivers on my g50vt-x1. when i went back to asus' drivers things worked ok again.
i especially had issues at idle with nvidia's drivers in that my gpu would not downclock.
Also for testing get GPU-Z (or HWMonitor) and Furmark and test until you see good temps (mine never goes over 98C with furmark) -
. but anyways, im willing to try. can you post a link please?
yes, im using GPU-Z. dont know what furmark is though.(im a noob)

This is a common problem with these notebooks, I have had to send mine in for warranty repair multiple times for that issue, they replace my vga and heat sink setup twice and my notebook still runs hot but I had the exact same problem with the 110c temps so often even on CSS and such that it warped part of the case. Good luck resolving th issue mine still runs pretty hot.

Yes it did, that is a result of the GPU undervolting itself so that it runs slower and cooler so that the heatsink and chip can cool back down to acceptable levels and when it reads an acceptable level it reverts to full voltage again and the cycle continues. -
UPDATE: so i took the lappy apart, and realized there was NO thermal paste on the VGA, NONE! and the CPU paste was all dried up, im off to radioshack for some AS5, one question, on the hatsink, there are some LIGHT BLUE-colored soft pads that make contact with several multiple components, what are these for? -
here are some pics.
on the heatsink, what are those blue pads? do they need to be replaced?
on the cpu/gpu picture, should i put Thermal paste on the "??" ?Attached Files:

The Light blue pads are a conductive adhesive material designed to create maximum transfer of heat from the chipset to the heatsink. Don't remove or damage those pads.
-
while you're there, check both the cpu and gpu for thermal paste, and don't forget to clean the vents for dust.
you could also try to run Windows 7 in the "balanced" power option if you still see no effect.( temp fix so ur computer doesn't run too hot ) -
the laptop is fixed(vents caked in with dust), but thanx for the tip!
EXTREME overheating issue?
