I turned it on this morning, put it on charge and left it on my bed.
Came back a few hours later, and it had gotten smoking hot. By the time I got speccy running, the CPU was still 77C.
The fan sounded fine though, I waited til the temperature dropped to 50C, everything still seemed fine, so I shut it down like normal.
The next time I switched it on, the fan began grinding really loudly about a minute afterwards. I've torn it down completely, and gotten the fan off the heatsink. Plugged it in and switched it on, and it sounded fine. It only sounded good when I was holding it up by the corners. If I pressed it against the desk, it would grind. When I screwed it back onto the heat sink and tried it again, it started grinding again. I'm not real sure what to do, I figured that if it were a bearing, then it would grind all the time.
Edit: Here's the fan in question anyway. What's the best place to look for a new one?

I think there is a metal housing around that fan. Maybe it is bent, or there is something stuck in the fan. It's probably a bearing though, if it's not completely shot adding some oil may help.
I posted some links that should hopefully help you in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/545302-eee-1005ha-tear-down-guide.html -
Thanks.
I can see that the fan blades are leaving little drag-marks on the plastic plate underneath, so I think that means the motor housing is sitting too low, which would mean, the bearing is the problem. I think so. I'll try adding a little lubricant. -
Fans are the cheapest part of a laptop. Search for the model number and replace it easily.

From your pic it looks like the model is ksb0405hb 9c71
There are a ton of listings on ebay: 1005HA | eBay -
Ah, well, somehow in all of my less than gentle tinkering with it, I did something to fix it. I'm not sure what I did, but it's no longer grinding, in fact it's running just fine.
Must have been another techno-gremlin. Thanks for all your helps though, folks. -

Nice!
That's a good outcome. I hope it stays like that, did you add any oil to it? or just bend the housing or something?
