Any external usb modem will work, just choose a reputable manufacturer. You can mod this to put into the case if you wanted, but there are no existing tutorials for the 1000H at the moment.

First off - I think I can speak for the entire NBR community by sharing our condolences with you. Having to deal with dinosaur speeds with the hardware of today would certainly frustrate any of us - especially those of us who've used 300, 600, and 1200 baud modems and know what you're experiencing.

Of course driver issues and hardware configuration will depend on whether or not you have a Linux or XP version of your system.

Something you may not be aware of is that you can connect your system to a mobile phone, if you have access to one. You can see how to do it at this link: http://tinyurl.com/6cnvha

With Cell access, you could even get yourself a Sat phone and use a Satellite uplink to 'net service, or just use whatever your cell service offers for 'net connection. Usually it's just a PCMCIA card or other interface that will connect to your cell.

Dial-up networking isn't much different than traditional Ethernet, you just need different hardware. The key factor in whether or not you can even use a dial up connection is whether or not you have an internal dial-up connection for your system. Phone jacks are smaller than Ethernet RJ-45's. If you don't already have one, you'll need to get one either from ASUS or an OEM supplier. There are EE PC1000's with internal dial up modem's, so it shouldn't be a problem to get one. Without one, you're going nowhere.

Another solution for your system, as many EEE's don't have dial-up modems installed, if you can't get one then consider getting a USB dial-up modem, which is what many EEE users have resorted to. You can see some of their solutions at EEEUser.com: http://tinyurl.com/5l773o

You should have better luck there finding the right hardware setup for your system. Hope the links help.

But of course, the problem is not in the hardware but in the huge, bloated web pages with each serving tens to hundreds of kilobytes worth of advertisements and flash movies, and requiring AJAX to do the most basic of things...

I suggest strongly using Firefox with the AdBlockPlus and NoScript extensions. Perhaps also a modified HOSTS file. That should help eliminate unneeded (and many times downright unwanted) traffic like advertising, data mining, and unnecessary flash movies.

Thanks for that, its a shame that there's no tutorials at the moment :(

    CyberVisions ....

There are many things here where I live that come under the heading of '' I only Wish '' and having a decent high speed internet connection is certainly one of them, Ive never experience any thing better than 20 Kbps and as I type this the connection is 9.8 Kbps . I also have Sony Ericssion k790i mobile phone which Ive managed to set up and connect my
computer to the internet using its EDGE option ( by Bluetooth and USB cable ) this EDGE connection takes my speed up to the dizzy height of 20 Kbps , but it can be unreliable due to the weather conditions at times. The dial up internet connection
    I use is from a Thai ISP , for 30 day's un limited use costs $ 9.00 or £ 7.00 .

Thanks for the links its appreciated :)

So it looks as if a USB external 56k modem is the way to go, would there be any thing that would need to be especially
configured on a 1000H , and would an external 56k dial up modem normally have a Driver CD with it .

    iceColdgin ...

Thanks for the link, I like the look of the , Model 3095 V.92 USB Mini External
modem, it looks a bit like tha Apple Mac USB modem. :)

Thanks for your comments , Some good points , I will certinally be looking at doing as many of them as possible :)
