Has anyone tried to install or know of successful installation of Windows XP on the Eee PC? Is there a barebones version of XP that would work, at least weed out all the extra drivers and crap that aren't required? 8GB is a decent size for an SSD, but not if Windows XP uses 3GB of it!
This looks like a great portable PC. Hell I've spent $300 on a PDA in the past, and $400-$500 for a fully functional PC not much bigger would be great.
Hell, probably could play some older games on it just fine too!
Hopefully there will be a low wattage dual-core one in the future with a 1280x800 display!

I put xp on my eee (4g), but I used nlite to reduce the install size. Also makes xp really fly. It boots faster than any other computer I've used. It takes about half the ssd space with some other software installed, and I use an 8gb SDHC card to put files on. Check out eeeuser.com for guides on doing that. They have a nice wiki with all the info you could want.

Thanks. Will look there.

I've actually installed XP Pro, with all the drivers and updates. It took 3.something but after compression and deleting unwanted files I ended up with 2GB.

Cool. Even though I like my laptop, there's so many times it's still too big just to do casual web surfing or update a spreadsheet or report in short order. The Eee PC can at least fit in my work bag and be ready to go on a moments notice.
This interesting tidbit from Wikipedia (FWIW):
" ASUS has announced a Windows version of the Eee PC by the end of the year 2007, which runs Windows XP natively. The Eee PC can officially run Windows XP and Xandros, but it is also possible to run Windows Vista on it. There's also a special version of Xubuntu available, dubbed eeeXubuntu. " -

nlite is your friend with the Eee.
I have a slimmed down version of XP Pro SP2 with Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook), FoxPro 9, Diskeeper 2008, eReader Pro, Picasa 2, Winamp 5.5, VLC media Player, and Foxit Reader and I still have 2.05gb of free space on the SSD. -
I have installed a normal version of XP Pro onto mine, there are some tips in the user manual for removing surplus files, and I cut virtual memory swap file to 256MB.
I have XP, Word2007, Nokia Data Suite, Firefox, Opera, avast AV and BT software all installed to the internal SSD. I still have over 1GB free and the machine runs very well, with the fastest boot of any machine I have used.
The only mod I have done is upping RAM to 1GB.

So what about the SDHC cards then? Just install WinXP with basic apps on the SSD and is the SDHC quick enough to install other apps? Do they run fairly flawless?
Also, what is maximum video memory?
Do you suppose there will be an update in the next year?
Ideally I would like to see:
8"-8.5" screen & move speakers to base
1280x800 resolution (or at least 1024x640)
HDMI Out
Or if the current 512MB / 4G go down about $50 I may consider it. -
I have already installed PaintShopPro, Portable Apps Suite and my divX codec packs and moved my .tmp and .temp folders to it. I also moved My Documents to it.
I havent noticed any slow down in the speed of these programs.

I could care less about Vista. But XP would be my OS of choice.
BTW, what games are capable with the Intel GPU in the current gen Eee? Can source games play on it, or is that too much of a struggle? -
here's a pretty good source for games - http://wiki.eeeuser.com/list:games
depends on the game it seems, says HL2 EP2 plays fine, CSS runs around 10fps, and TF2 and Portal crash -
Great, thanks for link. I am sooo close to buying one. But I think I will wait for the next gen to come around in a few months. Plus hopefully there will be some with native Windows XP included so I won't have to fork over $$$ for XP as well, and it will already be tuned for the capabilities.
BTW drakoniac, I see you live in Michigan. Whereabout? I live in Detroit Metro east side. You from Detroit area?
