I was going to PM one of the vendors on this site for a answer but figured others may also find this helpful.

For the Asus Ensemble models - specifically the V6J and W3J (v...etc) when ordered with 1 stick of RAM, is it installed in the spot under the keyboard, or is it installed in the underside location?

I ask because I'm thinking of buying one of these two models and upping the RAM down the road provided it's easy enough to do (see: underneath and accessible via a screw).

If my only option is taking apart the keyboard...etc to get there, I may just get it installed before it ships.

    Thx.

V6J under the laptop like seb said. W3J one under the keyboard. only two screws to take out and then take a smaller flat head screw driver and pry on the edge of the keyboard pops right off. difficulty level 2 very easy.

To confirm - the V6J has an empty slot under keyboard - the W3J underneath (provided the lappy is bought w/ just 1 stick)?

I can't help with the location, but noticed you mentioned getting the RAM installed prior to shipping. I was under the impression this wasn't possible with the Ensemble units. Meaning, the vendor cannot install the RAM without voiding the warranty -- instead the user has to install any post-purchase parts for the warranty to remain effective.

    Can someone clarify?

Actually, it 'does' *void* the warranty, but I'm using that term loosely.

As long as you keep your modules around, you can just switch them if you ever need to send it back for repairs, same for HD and Wireless card(in some cases).

I use the term loosely, because, well, ASUS 'can' choose to void the warranty, if you switch it.

    ^ wow - that's a travesty...even if a dealer replaces it?

Actually, I may of gotten confused.

Most dealers just sell the ENSEMBLE's, as-is, and if you want to upgrade RAM, and you also buy it form them, I would ASSUME then also send it to you, seperately.

Yes, what I meant is this: If a user upgrades his RAM and has an issue with the unit he/she can remove it and send it in to Asus...no problem.

However, if a user purchases an Ensemble and buys a stick of RAM and requests the dealer install it - that voids the warranty.

    User install = ok
    Dealer install = bad

I could have sworn I read that somewhere here, but I could be completely mistaken.

That's pretty much right...The problem is ASUS can see If you purchased the RAM with the system if It's on the same receipt...Which would give them the right to void your warranty. So to cover yourself, you can ask the vendor for separate receipts at the time of purchase, or buy your RAM elsewhere and install it on your own.

The only tip-off ASUS has if you get it installed by a dealer is the extra RAM on the receipt, so If they install the RAM for you and give you two receipts, you're all good.

If you ever have a problem, then just take out the extra RAM, thereby restoring the laptop back to It's factory specs, show them the system only receipt if they ask...and ASUS will honor your warranty. :)
