    Hey All.
So Ive had my G1s for over a year now and just in the past week i decided to try the esata slot with my external HDD. Since plugging it in the computer doesn't seem to be reading it. However during the time the esata is plugged in the computer does seem to freeze every so often for a few seconds but only when its plugged in. I tried installing new and old esata raid drivers but nothing has worked so far. Any tips or suggestions?

    Thanks
    Eso

Do you still have the external hard drive's USB cable plugged in as well?

Only thing I can think of is that your esata plug may not be going all the way in. You don't need the USB plugged in since I assume that your external comes with its own power adapter and you have that plugged in.

If you can plug you external drive via USB connector, than you can format your drive using disk management.
After formatting you can use your external drive via eSATA.

I had same situation with my F8Sn time ago.

Is your external drive set up as a dynamic disk in Windows?

There are two types -- basic and dynamic. If you are running Vista less than Ultimate or Business, you do not have support for dynamic disks. Maybe this is the problem. It would explain why neither SATA nor USB work. If you go to start->run-> diskmgmt.msc does the drive show up at all? My buddy had this problem and I had to convert his disk back to basic on my G1S which had Ultimate on it. It had a red icon next to the drive in disk management until it was converted from a dynamic disk back to basic and reformatted.

Windows XP Pro has support for dynamic disks, so if your primary system runs XP Pro you can copy your data off the drive, convert the disk to basic with disk management (diskmgmt.msc) and copy the data back. You will then be able to use it on your G1S with no problems.

If it's not a dynamic disk, move along then, nothing to see here!

Ill Give these all a try, i think the best bet is to format the drive but i first need to get all the data off in a safe place some how.

Hey, if you can connect your drive via usb, try if first. You might be capable to copy, format and do whatever you want.

well this is the case , i know have 860Gb of data i need to put somewhere to save it so i can format the external but i dont have that space so im working on it. Note the HDD does work when using a USB and is formatted to NTFS in two partions. if this affects esata from working im not sure. Im working on trying all the suggestions though. Thanks guys

If it works over USB it's not the dynamic disk problem I mentioned. So don't bother with all that.

Hey, 860Gb is the hell big, huge.
I'd waist couple days to right this data piece by piece on DVDs.
