Does anyone tried to hack ExpressGate? I mean install new software or modifiy existing? F.g. ExpressGate got Pidgin as IM comunicator installed, however this version doesn't support xmpp (Jabber) that makes it completely unusefull for me...
Maybe someone already did so or got clue how to hack it? It looks like some kind of linux however don't know how to get to it's filesystem...

ExpressGate is actually the Splashtop distro, so maybe you can search for info on "hacking" Splashtop. Things may be quite different in the way ASUS have it setup, though, so don't assume every Splashtop mod will work for Express Gate.

It is possible and I have seen an article about it on engadget or gizmodo, but it isn't very mainstream and its not very useful yet.

I hope they can get some emulators and other cool software running on it.

The express gate for my desktop has software for windows that lets you add things to it (the stuff Asus releases not your own things) if I am not mistaken I never used it so I uninstalled it.

I know for a fact it let you update express gate. So if some of those guys with the bright minds that know how to do this stuff decide they want to do it I am sure they can add stuff in rather easy.

The first step for me would be find where it gets installed too and start trying to find a way to edit exsisting programs with your own. So say find the link for "internet" and find a way to make it launch a different program.

I think its all linux based so finding existing linux programs would be square #1.

For me its a moot point really, I can boot into windows almost as fast as express gate and would rather do so, so I can have everything at my disposal (music files, internet, photoshop, ect) I would only maybe use XG if I needed to only check my email very quickly and I knew thats all I had to do. I cant use it on my G50V right now anyways as it does not function with a raid 0 setup for what ever reason.

I did a little research on this. You need a linux distro to unquash/requash the .sqx files. The ExpressGate folder is in the root of C: in a hidden folder called "ASUS.SYS". All of the .sqx files are in there.

    1. You need a Linux distro.
    2. If you're not familiar with Linux, then you will need to spend hours learning.
    3. Google "hacking express gate" or something similar or go to this forum:

    4. If you are successful, please post results here. :)
