I have a Asus z63a laptop.
I tried to connect an external monitor through a KVM switch today. But was not able to make the external monitor work.
Here is what happened:
When the laptop first booted, both external monitor and laptop monitor show the booting windows logo, but once it gets to the user logon window, the external monitor stopped showing anything.
Anyone knows what I need to do to make the external monitor work?
Many thanks!

There should be a FN+F# combo that has a symbol with two squares separated by a slash. If you use that it should switch you between LCD - CRT (external) - LCD+CRT (both screens). If that doesn't work it is probably a driver error.

or you can try changing the monitor settings manually in display properties.

haha, I always forget about that =P

Thanks so much for your prompt reply and help.
Here is what I've done:
1. I pressed Fn+F8. And that did not turn on the external monitor. Though Fn+F7 shuts down LCD monitor.
2. I went to BIOS setup, and even set it to CRT ONLY, and it still only boosts the laptop monitor.
3. I played with the Desktop -> Property > Setting
It shows two monitors in the drop down menu, and they are named exactly the same.
When I drag the monitor 2, it says this monitor is currently disabled. And I enabled it, now the Extend Desktop View checkbox is checked, and
the external monitor now shows my desktop wallpaper, but nothing else, such as the menu, the desktop icons etc. Nothing but a wallpaper.
4. Do I need to update the driver? Where is the driver download page, and how do I update it?
What am I missing here?
My other desktop (Acer) and laptop (Fujitsu) were set up right away, only this Asus i could not make it work.
Thanks in advance for your kind help. -
Can you believe this??
I right clicked on the desktop, then on the menu, there is an option says Graphics Option ->Output to.
Then the list shows:
Monitor
Laptop
Intel Dual Display Clone
Extended Desktop
I played with them, and found if I choose Monitor or Extended Desktop, it will turn on the External Monitor to work with.
Is this the only thing that I missed? -
is everything displaying properly on your external?
-
Yes. But I had to switch back and forth to find the best color accuracy. Other than that, it is working perfectly.

Extended desktop means that if you drag something off of your laptop then it will show up on the other monitor.

Yes, this is the situation where your external only showed the wallpaper. It is actually an extension of the desktop where you can put windows (like editing the code in the laptop screen and running for the results on the external).
But it should've with FN+F8. Be sure to press it at least three times and wait for a while, it takes some time to change the settings. If the external is detected (i.e. plugged in and on), then it will cycle like Alex said through LCD Only, CRT Only, LCD+CRT.
Otherwise it might be a driver issue. But if you got it working it's all fine.
External Monitor does not show
