I bought a used external Asus Slim Combo drive (SCB-2408-D) to be used with my notebook, which is Z32 (S5N series barebone) with Pentium M 1,6 GHz. The OS is Windows XP home with SP 1 and 2 installed.

When I connect the combo drive to the notebook, it recognizes it as an USB mass storage device, and not as a drive. Therefore, the notebook cannot run any data from the combo drive, nor can I save any data on it. However, the combo drive does work on its own (e.g. for listening to music).

What can I do? Any ideas?

Do you have the S5 specific cable or are you running a seperate usb to the computer and ac adapter to the wall?

Yeah, you might just have problems with that drive, but either should work.... I've had both work with the S5... you might want to try to start the unit up with it attached, or try to manually add a new device to the system...... do you have the 16 or 24x version?

    - by the way, I know I spoke with someone who is picking up an S5 who wanted to ebay his drive and cable and I suggested to him that the version you have with the seperate cables and ac adapter would be easier to sell on ebay, where as the one with just the cable is whats meant for the S5..... maybe I can have you two talk.

    Thanks,
    Justin

I've done both now, and neither seems to work [ :(]. When starting the unit with the drive attached, the laptop still recognizes it as an USB mass storage device.

Didn't succeed in manually adding it to the device list, either. For example, the manufacturer list didn't have Asus as an option...

    I have the 24x version.

Humm... I'm lost.. That drive should show up as a mass storage device, but you should also be able to boot off of it. Go into the Bios and make sure you have the USB drive option turned on as a boot from option.

    Thanks,
