I've looked around and found a few reports of the same thing happening, but basically, the LH hinge on my f3jp seized up. Because of this, the case cracked (because the whole hinge was moving rather than just the bit that's supposed to).

It's out of warrenty by 5 months.

I phoned up Asus. They won't sell me the hinges, I have to send it back to them for a repair. I'm waiting for the quote.

Does anyone know if the hinges from an F3M would fit? Are all the F3's the same construction?

Finally, has anyone had any success arguing that this is a design flaw, and therefore should be covered under the sale of goods act (I think it's reasonable to expect the hinges to not need replacing after 2 and a half years).

    Thanks,

    Leon

Can't you find the necessary parts (hinges, hinge covers, back cover maybe) on the ASUS eStore or a similar store for your region of the world? (see ASUS Info BoothFAQ)

I am suggesting this for 2 reasons:
    a) No need to pay for shipping and handling
    b) No need to deal with the potentially disastrous performance of the infamous UK ASUS repair service.

But if you do decide to send it in, for sure try to get it fixed for free using the option that you mention.

I see the OP has the exact same problem I had but my F3Jc's left hinge kind of seized up just after a year and gradually wore down the bottom case, eventually cracking the left corner. Cost me ~10% of the residual value of the laptop to replace the bottom case. I think it's its a design flaw as there is no metal bracing in the left corner whatsoever. If you have your bottom case replaced, then make sure you also have those hinges replaced because they'll most probably wear the case down again.

Also my now 1,5yr old Dell D630 also developed a similar case (occasional creaking) in its left hinge but it got sorted quickly at the local Dell Authorized Service Partner.

well, there is a hinge listed for an F3Ja, which I guess would work.

It's 3 bucks in the states, or over 10 euro's over here, plus postage :-(

Anyone willing to buy me one in the states and post it over?
