I am going to reinstall windows so I get a nice clean install without all the bloat ware and I need to fix a big problem which is that I can't install any new devices which is useful.
I have found a Windows XP Pro disk that will accept my code so thatÂ’s sorted.
Latest graphic cards drivers have been downloaded from ATI
I have been going through the download section and downloading all the latest drivers. But what are these two things for?
ASUS ATK0100 UTILITY driver
ATK0100 ACPI UTILITY
and
'UAA bus driver and Audio driver' when there are other 'audio' drivers? I am going the use the latest from realtek anyway.
and what about the hotfix utilities (3 of them) It does not say what they are for. (Q892627, Q893056 & Q918005)
Does anyone have any useful advice about drivers or software?
Enough questionsÂ…
Thanks,
crazyswede

audio driver is probably generic or an older version of the realtek.
I have a similar situation with my desktop, vista will auto install "NF4 Audio" drivers wich are ok, but you can manually use the latest realtek drivers wich have more options and a better sound quality.
You really only need drivers for the essentails, chipset, sound, video, and your devices. If you get the basics down and find that you need somthing else, then go hunt for it. -

Im digging around for you from what I can tell.
ASUS ATK0100 UTILITY Driver/ ATK0100 ACPI UTILITY - should be your modem driver (utility)
UAA bus driver and Audio driver - are the sound drivers, try them out if you want or go direct from realtek if you know they have drivers that work for you. UAA stands for Universal Audio Architecture This is for HD audio stuff.
The Q - hotfixes are rollup packages with a summary of various XP updates.
The basics :

Yep your welcome.
While your at it this is a good time to create a partition on your HDD so you can save files in a seperate partition from your OS so next time if you have to do a clean install, you can do OS/Drivers but keep your media intact.
Then as an added bonus if you choose to join the Vista crew down the road you can install Vista on the other partition and setup a dual-boot so you can have both XP and Vista together and choose wich one to use every time you start the computer. -
I already have 2 partitions... I keep 'My documents', email data and all other files on the 2nd partition. Hopefully I have everything... but I allways forget something
Well this is it -
Maybe you can try writing down all of the stuffs that you think you will like to back up, then tick them off as you run a checklist through the stuffs in the partition.

ASUS ATK0100 UTILITY Driver/ ATK0100 ACPI UTILITY is NOT the modem driver (which sits on the audio-lane or something). Instead, it's the ACPI driver. ACPI stands for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface. This is what allows you to control fans, use powersaving modes and whatnot. More info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acpi

Arghh... I can't get the network card to work... I plug the network cable and it says there is no cable connected.
I am writting this on a different computer of course. I am messing about with it now and I think I will have to do another install when I figure out what is happening.
fabarati: Thats what I thought... -
try deleting the network adapter and reinstalling the drivers. By the way, are you swedish? Cause you're named crazyswede, but you live in the UK...
-
The network card just decided to work when I tried it in the office this morning...weird.
Yes fabarati, I am Swedish living in the UK
Are you British living in Sweden? -
Cool! I love it when it does that.
Nope, just Swedish.
