Well im excited, i finally got my F3JP from newegg and i was going to post a nice review about it tommorow or thursday with plenty of pics but before hand i wanted to run the benches first. Anyhow i got the latest ATI catalyst drivers (7.1) and when i attempt to install i get "Try isntalling a vga standard adaptor first" error. I was wondering if anyone else has that issue with their laptop. Or if there is some sort of workaround. As of right now i have Catalyst 6.12 on the machine but would like to upgrade. I have all the latest patches and updates except for the video card. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

it could be that the x1700 is not supported yet by ati's new drivers. why are you upgrading anyway? it seems that people seem to be having more problems than improvements when they upgrade their video drivers.

Well, i personally never had any problems with upgrading catalyst drivers and i always got increased compatibility and performance (even though small) with my games and software and i just wanted to run all of 3d marks benches with the latest drivers..

Are you sure this new version 7.1 is for Mobility cards?

Mmmm... i think it is geared more towards vista, but the problem is that the cat drivers that came with my F3JP are 6.8, and i downloaded 7.1 and i get the "Try isntalling a vga standard adaptor first" error. Im just a little irked at asus because the download for the latest vga adaptor driver are the cat 6.8's on their support page. It appears ATI shafted asus with mobility support as their mobility driver download page does not list them as one of their partners for the driver.
EDIT: Hmm i found a post here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=100360&page=2&highlight=cant+install+catalyst+drivers where i can use modified .INF files to force catalyst 7.1 to recognize the X1700. But im interested to see if anyone could tell me an easier approach... -
i hav the same problem except mine is X700
the compatibility is stil there. so it says on the ATI site
thoe i cant even upgrade to 6.12
