    Greetings,
    My F3JP optical drive isn't working well. It has a lot of problems when I try to read Data DVD's (Movie DVD's works fine). For instance, I just bought F.E.A.R. from a gamestore, the disk is NEW and it took more that 2 hours to install (the drive makes a lot of noise when moving the lens). Some DVD's with software or music I record also takes a lot of time to read.
    I called Asus support in Portugal (where I live) and they say I must send the notebook. But I can't do this. I use this laptop daily at work and I can't be without it.
    What can I do? Is there any firmware update I can try?
    Can I buy just the drive? If so, from were?
    Sorry for the bad English
    Best regards

    1. Try cleaning the lens.
    2. If the drive is a typical slimline ODD there are a lot of options for replacement at around 50EUR.

    Thank you for the fast reply.
    Should I use one of those cleaning CD's?
    What is a ODD? I am not sure about the brand of the drive, but I think it's a standard laptop drive. Anyone with a F3JP know the model?
    I want to replace because I can't work without he notebook. What do I need to have in mind when looking for a new replacement drive?
    Thank you once again

    I would personally use some Q-tips and sanitary alcohol.

    ODD = optical disk drive

    Take a look at this thread wrt replacement: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=215365

    You can take out the drive and look at it, if it's similar to those posted on that thread then you have a standard slimline ODD. If you do, then any slimline option will work. Here are some examples:
