Hey guys im hoping someone can help me with this.
Anyhow my F3Jp is slowing down on boot and load times, basically with all of my crap installed and all the stuff my roomate put on the laptop is driving me nuts, i would like to use the recovery cd to revert the laptop to factory conditions right when i got it. So here are my questions.
1. When i got the laptop it was partitioned into 2 parts one was the 40GB WinXp OS partition and the other was the regular 60GB. When i use the recovery CD it will revert back to the same partition correct? (It is still partitioned this way at the moment i have not changed anything except running the NTFS file converter for both partitions)
2. Will i just have to move my files and documents that i want to keep to the 60 GB partition or leave them on the 40 GB OS partition if i want to keep them. Or will they all get overwritten?
3. DO i still have to reinstall my graphics drivers for my X1700? Will it revert to the factory driver that came with the laptop?
4. I had to reflash to the newer bios because i had the issue with the grainy screen, im assuming using the recovery wont downgrade my bios to the factory version?
5. What is the correct and proper process to do this, im stationed on a Base here in iraq that has very very very slow internet and i dont want to FUBAR the laptop and spend days trying to download information on how to unscrew it on what appears to be on carrier pigeon dial up speed internet.
Thanks for the help guys ahead of time.

Heya. When you use the recovery cd, you get 3 options, which are:
1. Restore C: but leave D:
2. Restore C: and D:
3. Partition C: and D: into C:
If you have files you want to keep, just move them to the 2nd drive, which in your case seems to be the 60gb D:
Yes, all your drivers will be stock - Though I'm sure there are stock x1700 drivers, but it'd be a good idea to update to newest drivers. I'd recommend you download everything you need now(drivers, freeware utilities, etc.) and save it to your D: so you can restore everything without a hitch. Or keep it on a USB drive and leave it on, so if you ever need to restore your HD, you know where to look.
I'm not too familiar with the BIOs, I would assume you don't need to because the BIOs is technically on its own.
Co-incidentally, I restored my notebook last night. Here is what I did basically:
1. Find all my CDs and DVDs with drivers, programs, etc. so I won't have to look for it when needed.
2. Download all the necessary software such as NHC, Avast!, Open Office, etc. and drivers that may be either outdated(Omega Drivers, Atheros wireless drivers,etc.).
3. Move all my files that I want to keep onto my D:, including mp3's, pictures and images', save files, resumes, essays, projects, etc.
4. Put restore CD in and let it guide you through.
5. Install all software and drivers, you'll need to reboot about 20 times
6. Put all files back to My Documents, etc.
7. Defrag C: and D:, Virus scan, clean registry
8. Parition and install ubuntu
Of course, 8. is optional -
Flippin sweet.
Ok i will go ahead and do that tnis weekend then, thanks for the help, appreciate it. Oh and one more thing, will it also put back all of the Asus bloatware that came with the laptop when i first recieved it? Thanks. -
yes, it will put back everything that was originally on your drive when you first used it.

Yea, but not Norton. You can stop it before it even installs, during the restore, Norton's installer will auto run, just hit cancel
The other utilities will need to be removed manually though. make sure you do a registry cleanup after the installations. -
And one last thing, it will still leave me with the NTFS converter program as it was when i got the laptop? Now i just have to find a nice big external HD to dump my stuff onto...Many thanks guys...
