    Hi,
I've had my Asus F3SA for a while now and I have tried to speed up the system a bit.I have deleted all the bloatware that came with the laptop and changed some settings that I read in a guide in this forum. Recently I tried to use the in-built webcam but it doen't work and an error comes up (photo inside). I've tried to reinstall the applications of the webcam but it didn't seem to change anything. The other more important thing though is that I can't install the SP1 for vista. It starts and then stops due to an error (second foto inside). could you please help me out with these issues because if I need to format the laptop I will certainly put XP on now that the SP3 is out.
    Thanks for the help

P.S. (anyone can give me a link for a guide for XP installation on asus laptops??) ty

So: the Vista installation is messed up. But you are going to put XP over it anyway. Is there a point then in installing Vista SP1?

What guide did you follow to tweak Windows? Maybe some services that should run were stopped.

Did you follow that link in the error window to microsoft.com? What did it say?

As to webcam, I can only give the generic suggestion of reinstalling the driver.

    For the XP guide:
    a) I have an XP installation and tweaking guide. Link in signature.
    b) On the ASUS Info Booth you will find a link to a guide for installing XP on the F3S. That will probably contain links for most of the drivers that you need.

    Hey MaD MaxX,
I have a clean install of Vista SP1 on my F3Sa and it runs very well. The files to create a new Vista SP1 install disk are available on the web and work with the product key on the bottom of your notebook. Limited know-how required. Amazingly clean install possible.

I also have 3 Gb of RAM.

It took me a while to setup this notebook to meet my expectations. The clean install was the key. Afterwards, I tried and eliminated various ASUS software titles, found newer versions at hardware manufacturer websites, etc. I installed just a few of the ASUS applications and drivers to make the notebook completely functional. After installing AVG, iTunes/QuickTime, MS Office 2003, and a few other applications, I have a fairly long list of processes. But with 3 Gb of RAM, the notebook does not slow down.

Your mileage, of course, may vary. But I recommend a Vista SP1 clean install.

    Jeremy

So do you want to install Vista or XP? I don't get it any more.

Clean Vista install is the same as clean XP install with the recovery disks, check my Tips and Tricks for how to do it (link in sig)
