All I was thinking of picking up the following laptop - http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=Asus_Laptop_F3Sv-AP073G
I have been looking for a laptop of this spec (T7300, dedicated graphics, 2GB RAM) for under £1000 for a while now and this laptop looks perfect but I just wondered what people thought about Asus?
I have heard they are decent but I just wanted some personal owner feedback as I cannot find a review of this model (or earlier models) anywhere.
I will mainly be using the laptop for the following -
Windows and Linux operating systems
Software development - windows: c/c++/c#/asp.net - linux: c/c++/python
Virtual machines - vmware workstation, virtual pc 2004/2007
General computer tasks (internet, video and music playback, etc. )
Maybe some light gaming (warcraft 3, maybe an FPS)
Bit of video editing (I would probably put a 100GB 7200RPM drive in the machine to speed it up a bit as well).
I am sure the system can handle all of this easily however I was unsure about a few things such as the build quality.
How good are Asus screen hinges?
How is the keyboard? Is it good to code on?
What is the screen like? I have read a few Asus screens are a little on the dim side with poor viewing angles and light leakage.
Any feedback would be great as I am very close to ordering this system I just want to have a bit more confidence in purchasing from a company I have never had before.
Many thanks,
Morgan
PS. Is it true that Asus make the MacBook/MacBook Pro laptops for Apple? Thought I would drop that in as I read that a few minutes ago![]()

The F3 is a decent buy, though I'm not too sure on the hinges. I haven't heard much problems about it, though I wouldn't be too surprised if in a few years, they'd get slightly wobbly. As for the keyboard, again, it's decent, flex in a few areas, but only with above average force pressing down on it. For coding, hmmmm, I'd assume it'd be fine, but if you will be using it for prolonged periods, perhaps investing in an external keyboard may be a good idea.
The screen is, like above, average in my opinion, minor light leakage at the bottom, and about 40 degrees viewing angles, which should be find in the most part.
And yah, ASUS used to be the sole OEM for the MacBook, but their order was recently cut by alot(due to them being a competitor in the market I would assume), they also received an order from Dell for 2 Million 14" notebooks(which have yet to be released), as well as production for the PS3. Just to name a few -
Asus F3Jc review here. The F3Sv uses the same chassis so everyhting will apply apart from the spec.
For coding/video editing you needa fast cpu and lots of ram so the 7300 +2GB RAM means you are covered there.
The 8400GS is mid range and should play older (and newer games on lower details) games fine.
Found the same laptop cheaper here. -
cheers for the info.
It looks like Asus are a decent make. However I have just noticed the G1S review and am very tempted at that now -
Im getting the exact same notebook from Nexus13.
BTW, its not a 8400GS, its a 8600GS.
If you get it before me ditoa, could you confirm a few things for me, such as whether there is really a built in tv-tuner...
But the notebook should be perfect. Seems like a good all-rounder. Just hope its not a jack of all trades..master of...... -
Hi
I've got one of these at the top of my shortlist.
How is it?
