I asked for some help on the what to buy forum, but didn't get many responses. Now that my current laptop has departed this world, and I am in the middle of finishing the school year, I am in need of a laptop, and may be purchasing one tonight. So any response would be great.

My local computer store carries these three Asus models, the F3T (7600go) for $1499. A8JS for $1749 (7700go) and the F3jp (x1700) for $1749. All prices in Canadian dollars.

My question is, for running games the next couple of years (after which I will upgrade again) which of these three is the best choice for the money? I am not concerned with the different screen resolutions as much as the ability to play games at reasonable, but not max settings.

I know these aren't dx10 machines, but I don't mind running games on lower settings as long as I can experience the gameplay. Some of the current/upcoming games I want to be able to play are STALKER, Bioshock, and Hellgate London. Current titles I am playing are all low graphics so I won't even list them.

    Thanks for any help.

Of the lot, the Go7700 is the most powerful. However, if you want to save money, the Go7600 is almost as powerful as the Go7700. So the Asus F3T might be the most cost-effective option.

What about the difference between the 512 mb go7700 versus 256 mb go7600. Does that make the gap between the two cards even greater for upcoming games?

personally i thought about buying the A8Js myself...truthfully its not that much of a step up from the go7600 to 7700.

as for 256 vs 512 ive read some places that 512 is better and some place 256 is better because it doesnt have the extra idling ram, it all depends on game requirements and if all the ram can be used. ive never gotten a straight answer myself, its also hard when comparing different cards

i would think either one is a safe bet

Just be warned that you might regret not waiting the couple of months for the new Santa Rosa laptops. There are going to be some pretty nice laptops for not much more than what you will be paying right now.

I have no time or interest or ability to deal with a new platform at launch. I have walked that road before, and decided to always max out the just finished technology instead of buying the new.

So my decision to go non-santa rosa is a well thought out one for me.
