Hey to the F8 gang. I was wondering if any of you with the newegg model had tried installing 4 gig of memory? I saw that one person under reviews at newegg stated they had tried 4, but only 3 showed up. So I figured I would throw it out on here and see if anyone had tried it. I have 3 in mine right now, however I was thinking of adding another 2 in place of the 1 gig, but didn't want to waste my time/money if the max is 3. If so that kind of stinks. I don't see why they sometimes put those limits on there. I think it should have no problem running 4 gigs.
Also once again I am at work so I can't check this until I get home, but I was watching a video I downloaded a while back giving the specs of the F8sv-b1 which has the 1gig of intel turbo memory. On this model the 1gig turbo memory is located in a spot right beside the hard drive when the panel is opened up. I am wondering if there is an available slot on our x2 models? If so does anyone know if it would make a difference to add it on? I still don't know alot about it, but I would think 4gig of memory with 1gig of turbo, would be pretty sweet.

After more studying, I realized that maybe the turbo memory wouldn't be so sweet. It seems it's not really all it's cracked up to be and in some cases can actually slow the processing down.
Anyway, it still might be something to look into because it is supposed to possibly help in preserving battery life, which we all know is absolutely horrible on the F8 and a few other models lately. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
The issue of RAM limitations and 4GB has been discussed much around here over the past few months - you can search for it. Basically, it doesn't work and 3GB is the max you will see. The second issue is what on earth you need 4GB for that 3GB will not accomplish for you -- 99.5% of users will not be able to push their systems to the level that 4GB RAM, even if you got it to work, would make a perceptible difference over 3GB in nearly all tasks.
The lack of widespread implementation of TurboMem by every one of the major PC manufacturers should give you the answer as to its utility. And any impact on battery life would not be sufficient to result in dramatic improvement. -
Also I will not be messing with the turbo memory idea since I have looked into it more and more it seems like a waste of time and money -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
No apologies necessary - everyone is here to help, and it was a reasonable question

The 3GB limitation has to do with the 32-bit operating system limitation. If you buy a 64-bit version of Windows Vista Ultimate and load it on, your computer will be able to handle 4GB of RAM. Keep in mind though that a number of other complications arise if you switch from a 32-bit to a 64-bit operating system.

Yeah, like drivers.
RAM limitations can come from several things, the most severe ones at the top:
1. HARDWARE: there might simply not be enough addressing bits for them on the mainboard/chipset.
2. BIOS: the hardware is there but the BIOS is not using it.
3. OPERATING SYSTEM: BIOS is supporting the hardware, but the OS is not able to address the entire RAM. A 32 bit OS will only adress 3.something, out of which some will be allocated to I/O addresses so that RAM will also be inaccessible. -
Hell I only have 2gigs and I have yet to push that.

in my f8sa i have 4gb of ram but with vista 32 bit. after upgrade to vista sp1, 4gb of ram is recognised, before sp1 only 3 of the 4gb was recognised. I actually bought the unit upgraded to 4gb on purchase. i suggest u go to performance and information tools and let windows rate your system. if your ram rating is lower than everything else, then address it. 3gb of ram should suffice though... my f8sa is a great system. the only dramas i have are that the system asks for drivers for every bluetooth peripheral device i have connected/paired on startup or whenever turning bluetooth on. anyone else have this issue?

Yep, Vista 32bit SP1 will recognize that 4GB of RAM are installed, but that doesn't mean it is going to use them
Which in some sense is worse than just saying 3.5 or whatever instead of 4. At least that's an honest reading. -
jlcamp7 - off-topic - Sorry!! But, how is your battery life? I still like everything about my F8 except for the battery life. I booted an Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD this weekend and it worked very well - wireless, sound, brightness - the works. I wish I could say the same for the H-P dv4z! OK - on topic - when I installed one 1-Gb and 1-2Gb in my F8 (dual-booter - XP and Vista) - the 3-Gb caused a serious problem with my video in XP. I had to go into Device Manager and disable a device to get the ATI video to work correctly. That said, I assume you're running Vista Home Premium and the 3-Gb did not cause a problem in Vista.
