I connected my F8VA-C1 to my home theater system with an HDMI cable. I am able to get 5.1 channels while playing mkv movies thanks to ac3filter. I can only get stereo sound in games like Half Life 2. I've switched multiple Catalyst drivers, Realtek drivers, XP x64 and Vista x64. Has anybody with an hdmi notebook been more successful?

that sounds like a game setting. Otherwise how has the F8Va-C1 been for gaming?

I doubt it is as simple as changing a game setting. I've tried Crysis and Mass Effect as well. In every case I've made sure to set it to surround sound. The receiver displays only two channels and I only hear two channels.

I don't know then, it's not hardware...has to be game or drivers

I think the games need to support Dolby Digital output to get 5.1 channels through SPDIF/HDMI. There might be programs available that can convert the multiple analog signals to a digital format.
