My friend has an F9E. He's let windows update install Vista SP1 now twice, with identical results.

Right after the installation has completed the system boots, and then it just won't enter Windows any more. Instead the computer just shuts down with no warning after showing the logo+progress bar screen for a minute.

This happens with every option (safe mode etc.) from the list brought up by pressing f8 when booting. The only thing that has helped is using the recovery DVD to re-install the whole system.

Needless to say this is just plain unacceptable, period. To me it seems that Vista really is a turd and only worth skipping.

Have you encountered this problem with F9 or other asus laptops?

Well I can only see two solutions:

don't install the SP1 but install updates 1 by 1. Reboot after each update, see if the computer still starts. When it doesn't, you have isolated the problematic update. Revert using system restore to a point before installing the update, install the rest (maybe also 1 by 1 in case there is more than 1 problem update).

    Solution 2: WinXP.
