i am about to finally put down my order for the asus g1s from xoticpc.com. i'm planning on getting the standard notebook with the only exception being an upgrade to the seagate 7200 rpm 160 GB hdd. however, i'm confronted with two questions before i go ahead and buy this beast of a notebook.

firstly, are the LEDs on the laptop controlled by the user? can you turn them off or control their activity i.e. how fast? they look really sweet and i will definitely prefer them to be on while at home, but when i drag this thing to the library or something, i would prefer to have them inactive.

secondly, i understand the lo jack anti-theft software does not work on the asus g1s due to the OS recovery software installed on it. however, in another thread, it was posted there's the possibility a reformat and mbr wipe could result in the ability to install it, which does make perfect sense. and i have a vista disc with all the drivers and utilities so i could re-install it. however, there is the possibility lo jack won't work nonetheless. is it really worth it? should i care if the lo jack security software doesn't work?

thanks ahead of time to all those who reply! :)

    A) As far as I know you can turn the LEDs on and off, but there is no further control.

    B) You have to absolutely wipe the system, including all partitions, to install LoJack. LoJack is nice, but being cautious in the first place is the best protection. I have a padlocked makeshift vault in my dorm room to keep it in. When that isn't available/doesn't fit/I'm lazy, I have a high tension anti theft cord that attaches to the back of the computer and the other end to some permanent fixture of the room. Not that you wouldn't, but if you have enough other measures LoJack isn't necessary.

awesome, i'm really glad you can turn the LEDs on and off. also, do u own the G1S and, if so, have you installed lo jack on it? by the way, thanks for the tips, i plan on buying a kensington lock, keeping it in some sort of makeshift vault as well, and i'm loving the idea of a high-tension anti-theft cord attached to a permanent fixture. thanks a lot!

it works, just use the bedframe or the window frame. Sometimes there are parts in the wall or something like that you can use.

Direct Console allows you to turn them on or off. But mine seem to play chornically, not just when I'm using Dx9/10

Sorry that the question may have been answered somewhere.

Does G1s offer Intel Robson Turbo memory? I know most of people think it is not worth it at the moment. However, G1s has the Intel Robson Turbo memory option?

One thing people don't mention about the direct console lights is that if you format your laptop with a non-factory install and never install the software and drivers that the lights simply will stay inactive!

I believe it doesn't come standard, although I believe BtoTech will give you an option to add that to the notebook.

Any laptop with Santa rosa and an Expresscard port supports Robson, with a BIOS upgrade.

    Many thanks.

All I need is to insert some sort of memory card into the Expresscard port and have the BIOS upgrade and I have the Intel Robson feature?

haha, very true! i was given a copy of halo 2 vista for graduation from a friend who was unaware i didn't have vista and my desktop really sucks. plus, i have halo 2 for the xbox BUT now that i'll have a vista notebook, i'll finally be able to try it out!

what i'm most looking forward to is finally being able to play the games off the source engine...all my friends play a lot of source, but i'm still playing 1.6. i haven't even played through half-life 2! not to mention bf2 and coh.

Congratulations Undoing, I'm glad you decided to go with the G1. It's an amazing system for the price.

Ah, I would love to added that extra GB, but I was already pushing my funds way too much for that. Every dollar counts, unfortunately, as a soon-to-be college student and the only thing I changed was the 5400 RMP hdd to a 7200 RPM one. But thanks for the advice!

Thanks so much Fren! Thanks so much for helping me make this decision because I probably would've ended up with a dinky dell inspiron e1705 if it wasn't for your suggestions. If you ever need to ask something, which I doubt I will be able to help, I'll certainly try my best to help you out.

"Chronically" haha.. true. I've always wondered, they just keep blinking even if no applications are open. But a new app that can control the frequency of the lights would be awesome.

ps. I love my G1S. Getttt it... u won't regret it.. cant' wait till new/faster video drivers come out
