I finally got a chance to head over to home depot to get some wood to make a stand for my homemade cooler. I was originally going to use Plexiglas as the surface but the thickest sheet they had was $44..No thank you lmao so I bought some pressed wood and after an hour of cutting and drilling, my cooler was born.

Here are the fans I used along with the PSU...
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835200027
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152019

For the power supply I did have to short out the green main connecting wire to obviously run it without a mobo.(not sure if you can see that in the pictures)
    Thermal compound is Arctic MX-3

2 fans are connected to the psu and the other I converted into a usb plug just to try it out. if you plan on making a homemade cooler I STRONGLY suggest you use a psu to power them because when converted into a usb plug, they run on low with no way of adjusting the fan speed.

This is the mod I had done months ago with my G50. It has advantages and big disadvantages so regardless of what others say it is not worth it.

The fan now focuses on the cpu and gpu copper heatsinks and no longer draws the air that is physically around the gpu, cpu, ram, hdd, etc..

Looks good, wonder how it performs.. But as Soviet said, post your temps, preferably with/ without the cooler to see it's effectivness.

Btw u could have used a battery charger (or something siminlar) to power the fans. The battery charger run at 12V so fans could go at full speed. Thats what I'm going to use when I build my cooler.

Planning on taking screenshots of my temps idle and gaming with the cooler later on.
I just wanted to show the cooler as many "G51 owners" have heating issues.

BTW if you do not get any fan control when using a battery charger plus the psu trick is pretty simple.

That DIY cooler is so... cute.

Hopefully my copper blocks come tomorrow or Tuesday. After that I can make my own thread. Hell, might as well make a (compiled) G51 cooling thread to complement Tev's optimization one.

I also ordered a cooper block to do some tests of an idea that up to the moment seems to be great :D once i get the notebooks and the results i will make a thread to show all of you.

Part of my idea includes as showed in the pics to hit directly the cooler of the notebook with another aluminum cooler and another 5 into critical parts where heat is more concentrated and also to extract heat with the Evercool Fairy :D

The evercool fairy is utter crap lol it falls of non stop. I'm trying to mount a fan sideways on the stand right inf front of the exhaust vent so it pulls the air out and releases it a bit cooler.

Well, I can attest to the efficacy of adding eight 10x9x4mm copper blocks around the GPU heatsink. Also, when I was looking at the inside of the backpanel, I noticed that there was a light mesh covering about half of the GPU intake vent. I removed it. Anyway.

Ambient was fluctuating between 69F and 70F.
Test was run at 1280x768 resolution.
CPU at standard 1.350 voltage, 11.5 multiplier, and 3.06 GHz clocks
    GPU at standard 500/1250/799
    Mounted on inactive Zalman NC2000
GPU was heated up to 65C before I began the test.

    Max GPU temperature: 86C

That's in comparison to another test, run under almost the same conditions (ambient temperature was about 73F) and procedures. GPU maxed at 89C.

I'm attaching my GPU-Z sensor log for your viewing pleasure.

Soviet, you have happy customer who's even happier. I just need more copper and a good drill.

And you can really slow it down by unplugging it.

Anyway, it's raining copper, as I got my second set of copper blocks in the mail. Turns out these are not 18x12x4mm blocks, but 10x9x4mm. Weird. Was going to give the seller negative feedback, but since they fit better I'll let it pass.

Anyway, ambient is a warmer 75F
    1280x768 resolutionon 3DMark06
    1.350v, 11.5x, 3.06 GHz
    500/1250/799
GPU heated up in Furmark, test started when it was about 65C
On top of inactive Zalman NC2000
16 copper blocks with Sekisui tape.

    87C max Huzzah.

Under the exact same conditions, pre-mod, my GPU maxed at 89C.

    GPU-Z log included

That should drop my temps a good amount since the fans will just blow away the heat from the blocks. Can you link us to the second batch of blocks you got?

After talking with Soviet, I also recommend getting Sekisui thermal tape to replace whatever stock stuff they put. The stock stuff is like dry putty. Not fun to take off.

Get the tape too. The Soviet recommended it, and I listen to The Soviet.

How many did you order, by the way? I'm going to need at least 24 (three packs) to get everything covered.

Don't hesitate. Pick up as many as you think you need. The seller offers free shipping anyway.

I feel that I'm partly responsible for voiding the warranties of half the G51's on this forum, haha.

I bought mine from Best Buy without additional warranty, It's not like I'd be missing much.

For your HDD mod, you just put the copper plate underneath the HDD, contacting the back plastic wall of the HDD bay, right?

I don't know if it touches or not. It most likely doesn't though. The copper plate would be the component that heat would saturate into rather than just staying in the hard drive. The heat from the copper plate would then either be vacuumed up by the fans, or dissipate through the tiny holes that I am going to drill into my backpanel tonight.

I don't think you touched the HDD with your additional upgrades. I remember you saying
that you replaced the aluminum with copper. I wonder about how you did that, ebcause you mentioned your top secret KGB installation, but I won't press you for top secret information.

Anyway, you said you lost 5+ on your temperatures, right? I can try that on my stock HDD (since it comes with a bracket), but I'll need to secure a second bracket for my other HDD. Which is hard since Asus has them all out of stock.

Tomorrow I will be replacing my original copper plate with a thicker and larger plate that will cover the entire HDD mounting bracket. I will need to drill holes for the screws though, so that will take a while. I will need to sacrifice one of my cobalt drill bits for this job.

I will be sending my original copper plate to kevindd992002 as charity. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=286151&page=232

I believe I had a clearance of ~4mm. I used a 2mm thick plate. I will try a 2.2mm plate tomorrow, but what is concerning me the most is the ODD release latch located over the hard drive on the top right. If I use the larger plate, my clearance would be reduced to less than 3mm, so I may need to experiment with different thicknesses.

Hmm. I'l keep that in mind.

I'll test clearance on my own HDDs with some sheets of cardboard.

On a happy note, with light usage (browsing, music) my GPU is idling at 49C, which is good since my ambient is 80F. Before my mod that would be at least 54C
