I've finally finally decided on the V6J...
Just one final question to V6J owners (not that there seem to be many on this forum.. still).....and resellers...
Will this notebook withstand 10-12 hours of use everyday?
I don't game at all, but besides the usual office and surfing applications, it will be used for some chemical calculations and 3D chemical modeling.
    Right choice?

Gizbug: Great! What are you planning to use it for?

Eddie: Thanks. Yes, I was planning to get the extended warranty, but I hope I never need it (fingers crossed)
My ancient Dell Inspiron has been with me 4 yrs without a single problem; hoping to have the same luck with the V6J.
That said, do you think I should go with something sturdier for my purposes?
I need the portability too; hence narrowed it down to this one.

Yes, it could withstand that. I imagine all laptops are able to withstand non-stop workload. But if you want to increase reliability or life of your laptop components, a cooling pad might be a good idea though I'll never opt for one.

Yes, I did think of that but a cooling pad seems really cumbersome and clunky-looking. Don't want to have to lug it around either.
Guess I'll just have to wait and see how hot it gets.

I don't think you'll need a cooling pad... just make sure the CPU throttles down then you're not stressing it; it should be fine :)

If you run the system on AC power and use the program powergear - although it's great and I've used it since it's first version.... on AC power it's set up to tell the computer it can run at full blast... so even if you don't need it, you're running at full power. If you take the system and put it on battery power - it's the polar opposite while doing the same stuff. Now if you were gaming or doing hardcore graphics stuff - yeah being plugged in isn't a bad idea if you're going to be doing more then say 4 hours of hard use..... but these notebooks are designed for battery use - and being plugged in is something not just to do while at home - but really only to charge or when you need huge amounts of power for a long time.

.. with that said, if you like to use it the "old" way, like a lot of us probably still do..... there are other programs which will suit you better. But they'll only get hot when it's performance is up.. because that generates heat.

I think it has more chance of getting kill by coffee/tea than over heating. It will last a lifetime if you take goodcare of it (minus the battery).

A pilot huh? Me too.. well, student pilot =( Flight lesson is so darn expensive!

    Hey Justin,

I know there is a lot of debate about what is really best for the batteries in modern devices, but are you saying that you should only keep on AC when it is charging or you are really working the computer? I have a dock on my current laptop, so it is plugged in whenever I am at my desk (about half the time, the other half I run the battery(ies) down almost all the way). Should I not do this on the V6j I am planning to get? I guess that the real question is what problems does this cause?

Just use the pc as you want. the batterys will last about 2 years easy no matter how you treat it doesnt really matter. so its not even something to worry about.noone really has an exact science answer to that question its all guesses. and most dont make that big a difference in battery life.

Yeah, I am here two years later with ok battery life from both of my current batteries, but it just seemed from Justin's answer that it was "bad" for the computer, not so much the battery. Nothing will be damaged by running on AC often, right? I just run the risk of it being warmer when I do? Thanks!

What is commonly called "wear and tear" on components is heat. Running on AC power usually tells the laptop that it can run everything at full speed which will of course generate more heat. If you're concerned with making the components last as long as possible, then I wouldn't recommend using AC all the time.

yes heat above the factory specs can make it die faster. i run desktops for years non stop makes no differnce in life. the only thing that can die is your Hard drive from spinning all the time which is normal. ive seen laptops run two years straight when i worked in IT rebooted once in a while. To say the laptop will die quicker on ac then battery is just dumb. You can lower the voltage of you cpu and GPU when plugged in so it will run cooler. if you want to last as long as possible just never turn it on how about that.

and pentium Ms dont always run at full speed only if you want it to. they use dynamic switching most the time at least thats how they should be set up. you should also set the hard drive to spin down.

I didnt mean to be rude to your comment yes its true heat is bad. But its so easy for laptops to last 5 years these days using them to full potential isnt a problem anymore. Really only harddrives die. after the first year i rarely see issues with memory or cpu or motherboards. as long as said items are taken care of no throwing your laptop around.

Heat will wear down your parts, but more likely the chassis will die long before the components give out.

I mean old apple 2s still run fine those things were tanks. as long as the are good quality parts to begin with they really do last forever. as long as not extreme temps are applied to them no moisture. Really the only thing that gives out are mechanical parts.

Yeah, I have an HP LaserJet from 1988 that will give my brand new one a run for its money on quality - and were talking a printer that is 18 years old and stronger after all that than one that is 1 year old...anyway, back to the topic at hand.

I don't take what you said as rude - my comment was rather silly, I just wanted to make sure I knew what Justin was talking about. The one questions I do still have is this. My laptop is usually on all night - sometimes playing music the whole time, other times only playing music for an hour then it just sits. Is this really bad for the hard drive, or will the computer load that all to RAM and let the hard drive turn off? Also, I have two laptop drives in enclosures, which are usually on 24/7 - are they just going to fry really soon, or should they be ok since they can dissipate heat more effectively?

Having your pc on all the time is not bad. Set your Harddrive to spin down after like half hour. as for playing music all night. All i know is i made the mistake of doing that once for a week. everynight **** harddrive crashed taking 80gigs of MP3s with it. so i will not make that mistake again now i have a raid server with about 1.5 terrabytes of space. never gonna lose anything again.

PC, Battery, AC Adapter, restore CD and the following:
    Microsoft Works Suite 8
    Norton AntiVirus 2005
    NERO Express V6.0
    ASUSDVD XP 5.0
    Power Director V3.0 DE
    Medi@Show V2.0 SE

That list was taken from PROPortable's site. I think other markets get a carrying case and maybe a mouse...but not for the US.

I don't understand why they would exclude these from the US market - the case specifically. I know some other manufs. don't include them, but it would still be a nice throw in.
