Hi all. Newbie here from the UK :)

Well, after several months of researching a new laptop, I've finally taken the plunge and ordered an Asus V6Va. Funnily enough, I'd worked my way through the alphabet of manufacturers, Acer, Dell, HP, Samsung, Sony etc, but had initially completely overlooked Asus... until I came across your great forum :)

You can wait for a London bus for ages... and then 3 come along at once. And so it was that I suddenly became aware of 3 laptop beauties in the form of the W3V, V6Va, and the M6Va (Z70v outside Europe I believe). And kitted out with decent graphics cards and CPU's, beauty certainly appears to be more than skin deep with this trio. Alas, I had to choose just one of them (how unfair is that), but thanks to some excellent discussion on this forum, and some much appreciated feedback from Coriolis, I've just ordered a V6Va. After 2 months of exhaustive research, I'm sad to say that this decision ranks up there with the naming of my children in terms of importance - choosing my wife was easier! :D Just kidding. Anyway...

Thanks again for an excellent forum. I look forward to posting my initial impressions of the V6Va once it arrives next week.

Congrats... very, very nice notebook. I hope you have the IPS screen there in the UK.

I now feel like a proud father having just taken delivery of a new child ;)

I've read numerous threads Justin re the IPS screen, including many of your own posts. And having read the post in which you suggested Asus suppliers should be familiar with the IPS screens, my own retailer (Red Cloud Technologies) were unsure themselves. Tut, tut. So, to answer your question, I'm not sure if it does or doesn't, but I'll certainly let you know my opinion of the screen's overall quality once it arrives. Could it be that IPS screens were not shipped to Europe?

Well if it's not the very best screen you've ever seen - by far.... it's not an IPS... plus if it's not, you should have bought it considerably cheaper.... because the model without should be a $200-300 less.

I have a new V6Va (from ProPortable in fact). You will enjoy yours.
I bought mine in late December 2005. Does this have the IPS screen? It is one heck of a nice panel regardless.

I think ProPortable only carries V6Va's with the IPS screen; Justin would not sell it otherwise...(I think that's what he said)

Thank you all for your kind feedback. Very much appreciated.

To answer Justin's question, it appears that the IPS screen does not actually ship to the UK - I'm not sure about the rest of Europe though. This presumably accounts for my Asus dealer's initial confusion as to what exactly IPS is. To his credit though, he did some research and came back with the following which will probably provide food for thought on this forum:

"LCDs using "In-Plane Switching" "IPS" liquid crystal modes marketed specifically for pre-press or photographic work should have colours which are less affected by viewing angles for that application, however IPS tends to have an inferior black-state and lower contrast levels. "Vertically Aligned" eg "MVA" (Multidomain -VA) boast the darkest blacks and equivalently highest contrast of any LCD technology. IPS technology also has a larger drain on batterylife, making it less efficient for a laptop. So as with all new technology it is a compromise! Depends what is more important, rich colours and contrast (and battery!) or wider view angles?"

    Let debate commence ;)
