I have an M50SV-B1 and when trying to play some movies I get a message recently saying my firmware isnt up to date, and it will not let me play newer BD movies.

I cant find a firmware update for this drive anywhere, and from what I have read, it's locked to only accept firmware from ASUS, not from panasonic (aka mat****a).

Does anyone have any clue as to where to get firmware updates for this thing? I know asus uses it in several of their higher end notebooks, but I cant find anything in their download section :(.

Have you tried searching in the ma****a website? Firmwares are usually given out by the actual drive manufacturer.

What is a "BD" movie? I don't follow that.

Isn't this some DRM sort of thing?

PS: Matsh!ta firmware is notoriously difficult to find... I also tried to look for firmware for my drive once, but I gave up pretty quickly. Everybody on the forums was saying that it's difficult to find. (it wasn't something very important, either).

Aha, I was expecting "BR" as an acronym. If blueray movies don't work for some reason, you could also phrase this as a warranty claim and have ASUS take care of it instead of you worrying about firmware and whatnot.

    FAIL, both of you! LOL

BD stands for Blu-ray Disc... Much like DVD stood for Digital Video Disc.

Anyway, I hate to break it to you but MatSh!ta/Panasonic never provides user upgradeable firmware updates.

Thanks guys. I guess I will contact Asus about this and see what they say. If I cant even play newer movies with this drive, then what good is it? I shoulda saved myself $50 and went with the M50SV-X1 and got another gig of RAM and a faster CPU, lol.
