Justin, is the entire shipment spoken for? If someone changes their mind or if there are any left I might be able to convince the parents to buy it for me for graduation. Hit me with an email if you can.
-
Cool, it looks like a combination of the two I have seen. It has the lighter touchpad and interior but the nice dark exterior with the ASUS logo in the center. It's an elegant contrast. The area around the touchpad looks better in those pictures than the other light-colored touchpads I have seen in pictures. I am really wanting one of these now. I graduate (undergrad graduation) on Apr 29th. Maybe I'll try to get one as a graduation present.

By the way... I can personally confirm a few things.
1. there is one stick of 512mb, which leaves 1 dimm open for easy upgrades down the road.
2. The hard drive is a 5400rpm/60gb.... the good news is it has a connection similar to the Z7, where it can easily be upgraded to an sATA drive down the road...... however the connection is not in the box, but I think it would be an under $5 cable that will be available in the months to come.
3. The package comes with the travelers drawer.
4. The package comes with the black wireless logitech that people around the world have been getting..
5... although different from the demo... this is more refined I think and purely a beauty.
More to come after I get a chance to play with my mine... update you guys after work.
Thanks,
Justin

Here is my first post from my new baby.... I'm charging my battery and figured I'd give you my (biased) opinion on the W3v.
1. typing is just as good as the V6. Although I the left and right click buttons are the same size as the V6, it seems to have a slightly better feel than it does.
2. I love the screen. Yes... when you're on a black background or have the screen off, you can see yourself in it... like a mirror.. but with a white background or any other color.. it just pops. I used it outside with my back to the sun and although it had a weird look to it (the screen that is)... I could actually read what I was doing. I've NEVER been able to do that before on any other screen.
3. I think the res is perfect for this size screen.... Whether the screen is good enough for you may be another story.. but anyone who thinks a 15.4" is too big, and a 12" is too small... Hello 14" widescreen. I just measured it against my M5 and they have the same heights (about 7.75") .. but the W3 is 2.25" wider (12" vs 9.75")... gives just that much more room to a 12" regular ratio that makes it very usable.
4. I screen seems to have a little fine dust on it... which may initially look like dead pixels... but I don't think you could see a dead pixel on this screen even if you had one... but just for a record... it is all dust.. i cleared mine off with some compressed air.
5. The touchpad is designed for widescreen... which is helpful for getting around. It also means the left and right click buttons are longer which make them even more usable than my M5.
6. The palmrest is just big enough to hold my palms (convienent isn't it?)
7. The battery and the hinge really set this off. There isn't a huge amount of space above the keyboard like you'll find on a lot of computers... even the S5.... but the screen sits high enough (due to the how the battery is designed) so that your hands don't get in the way of what you're seeing on the screen.....
8. The keyboard make use of a new font.. not sure what it is, but it's more updated than what we used to see on the keys.. The V6 and W5 use this font I think.. but I never noticed it as much as I do on this one.
Overall, it's a nice solid package and I think even the most demanding of you will see the same.
Thanks,
Justin

That looks way better than I thought it was going to. The outside actually looks lighter than some of the other shots I've seen, but again that could be lighting. Only unfortunate thing I see is that the touchpad doesn't match the touchpad surround. I think that would have looked better. Otherwise, it sure does look good!
Can't wait to hear more Justin.

Heads Up:
If you didn't get a tracking number today....... If there are some of you who had in pre-orders who would rather the 530g wifi router instead of the wl-hhd wireless hard drive kit and access point... let me know. It might let us get out more of the W3's tomorrow as the hard drive kits are low and more aren't coming in till the end of the day tomorrow.
I know the wireless hard drive kit costs a little more..... but our cost on the wl-hdd and the wl-530g is the same...... and both are more expensive than the original wl-330g I offered you.
If some of you can make better use of the router... email me and it might push your ship to date up a day. A lot of you have already called and said that you'd get more use out of the router... so I figure I'd give you all the same oppurtunity.
Thanks,
Justin

the rest of the pre-orders should go out tomorrow pending availability of the wireless hard drive kits. Again, anyone who would rather the 530g router... drop me a line because it might ease some of the tension I've got... if you have more use for a router over an access point you could put a hard drive in... then so be it.
Anyone who ordered on or after last Friday.. your's may not go out until Wednesday..... Still sooner than I told you, I'm sure.

The touchpad surround on the pics Justin posted DOES look slightly different from the one in any of the other pics I've seen, but even though others keep saying the notebooks looks exactly like meijern's pics, I don't see that. The whole thing looks lighter to me, but again, maybe that's the lighting! []

What happens to those demos? would one be available for purchase by any chance? [8D]

Yeah, but we already said that..... the palmrest is lighter too.... but not even close to how light the W3a is..... But we already said that last week. But from my work with it so far...... the colors aren't bothering me as much I thought I'd dislike a lighter color and loved the demo....... but it's more than grown on me since this afternoon and I think I do like it more than my V6. Although when I got the V6, I loved the entirely black system as well.

I am also sad and disapointed that the shade of a touchpad surround can affect you this much. I mean, I read that long post and [respectfully] shake my head thinking that the only one who seemed to be all worked up about this subject is you Cal. But as someone else pointed out "to each its own".
I would like to point something out... if (in your eyes) the shade of the touchpad surround is the only flaw... then you should still go for the W3. I have to balance processor speed against laptop weight.. against GPU .. against carbon fiber chassis... against how much it will hurt my pocket ($$$).. If the color shade was my only problem... well you get my drift. []
I do hope you find your perfect laptop (no sarcasm here).

Looking at the official pictures Justin posted, can we all agree that It's definitely a different touchpad surround shade of aluminum (lighter) than the one's featured on the pre-order page?...(and that It wasn't just one model with various angles of light reflection?) I'm not trying to start anything, I'm being 100% serious and asking you all a question...I just want some opinions to confirm the potential for a "uniform" system did exist at one point and that I'm not completely mistaken?

well buddy cal, what else is new? prototypes always look better! cars, computers, houses whatever. niche consumers like us are ignored to defer to the mass market.
-
PROPortable Company Representative
Actually in Asus' case that's usually not true. For most companies nicer materials and features (like in cars) don't make the final production because of the bottom line. Asus is actually quite the opposite 95% of the time. The prototype W1 looked like junk compared to the final unit..... In many ways the final W3 has benefits over the demo... both in features and details...... now I'm not talking about details like an aluninum palm rest, but the details within things like that.... the little trim detail around the touchpad surround (what we argued over as the touchpad surround itself)..... etc.
Thanks,
Justin

First off, It wasn't just the touchpad surround, It was basically the whole systems shade/colouring having a nice uniform look to the entire exterior...the touchpad surround was only so important because It was the main distinction that told us which version we were going to end up with, so I/we focused on that...But It wasn't even that...I thought I made it clear in that long post that the W3V and Its touchpad hasn't affected me much at all Cyber6? You have no idea who I am or what stage I'm at in this process to make a comment like that and assume you know where I'm coming from (Cyber6), whether you meant to offend me or not, you did...There are/were also many other factors I've been considering...let me fill you in...I've never been dead set on the W3V as the exact perfect system overall for my needs...It's definitely a very nice system and right up there for me...but I've been trying to decide between three systems...and because they're all so close to eachother as far as my needs and wants are concerned...certain little things become all there really is/ all it really takes to help sway me one way or another, (otherwise I'd never be able to make a decision or even come close) hence the touchpad surround which happens to have an effect on the overall look as far as I'm concerned. Up until the W3V just arrived and those pics were posted, yes I was very curious about exactly what It was going to look like. And because we had no idea which way It was going to end up looking...and I need a laptop soon...it became a big issue and something I needed to know in order to make my final decision. When you get to where I'm at in this process, (which is past taking all the following and then some into consideration..."balance processor speed against laptop weight.. against GPU .. against carbon fiber chassis... against how much it will hurt my pocket ($$$)..")and you still have THREE models left that are all basically left on EQUAL footing with you, then It's these small details that make all the difference in your final decision making process...If you think I'm not going to get the W3V just because of the touchpad surround, in a way you're right...because now in my opinion, one of the other systems on equal footing just bumped itself ahead one notch in that category of my preferences and makes it a better fit for me overall. This is what I meant when I said people assume things...you didn't know what context I was basing my opinions and my decision not to buy the W3V on, and yet you still had the nerve to say things about me, my preferences and my choices. The next time you feel like posting something rude and confrontational about someone else, take more time to think things through and not base so much on assumption. Understanding WHY that particular detail might have such an impact on me and my decision regarding buying a W3V or not makes all the difference in you being "sad and disappointed" in something that affects me, doesn't it?
This forum is supposed to be a friendly environment to gain and share information ON ASUS LAPTOPS in...not to be filled with personal "attacks" on people and then their subsequent posts to clear things up/defend themselves. I feel bad for everyone else having to view this. I thought I cleared things up, It's ONLY A LAPTOP...lets get back on track here...[8D] -
PROPortable Company Representative
wow, is that directed towards me? Because if it was, my post wasn't even to you.... but I feel as if yours was responding to me.
I don't care what you like or don't like...... as you said.. it's just a laptop and all I said is that the notebooks usually end up for the better and Asus is actually the judge for that. Whether or not you want to buy it is one thing, but Asus made a choice to bring in what they did to best compliment their line. The more I hear, the more I am to understand they want to keep the W3 and V6 seperate and the way they made the color choices you can see how much different it looks than if it were all black. Basically I think they wanted to stop someone like me from saying... " it's the exact same system but has 1.5" less screen height and a regular sized dvd drive"....... Because honestly.. thats what the demo was.... there wasn't much telling them apart.
So, although off the subject (and I only responded becasue I think you were responded to what I said in a way).... I know Asus doesn't want to have models like Apple does... where they all look like the same system just different sizes. So, could they just be trying to reach as many different type of people as possible and give every model the best chance to stand by itself? It would make sense since they are at a stage in the market where they aren't known for more much than the W1 and maybe the S5... but mostly the W1.. Even the W2 is going to be different enough from the W1 to stand by itself.
But I guess the whole point is... love it or hate it, who really cares? I just realized why I feel drawn to the new colors.... the palm rest and lcd bezel are the color of the M2n... a bunch of different colors and textures and materials going on.... overall if you were "stuck" with this computer you'd still end up loving.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi, Just want to know what the purpose of a SATA HDD plug will be? I assume that it will still be transferring data through the PATA interface but through a SATA plug. Doesnt this mean its still using the PATA interface? Then perhaps any speed advantages provided by SATA will be lost through the PATA interface?
-
Fedex just delivered my W3V and I think I have to agree with meijern. This unit looks like his, but with the options we all know the US version has compared to the one he posted.
Calibrated, I wish you could see this unit in person. I don't believe you would dislike it. -
How does the resolution look? One of my concerns with the W3V is that it won't have enough screen real estate, or that it won't look as sharp as other screens that have higher resolutions.
Any comments from new W3V owners?

First... there is a high speed connection on the motherboard that the pata drive connects into now through a special cable....... this will allow for an sATA cable to be used down the road with with an sATA drive to get the best performance.... This is just like what they did in the Z7. So don't worry.. it's not going to be like a convertor... if anything it's basically an sATA to pATA convertor...... with the true performance coming when you can use an sATA drive.
Thanks,
Justin
